The American Bar Association’s Governmental Affairs Office (GAO) seeks a highly motivated professional individual to serve as a Legislative Associate to provide research, writing, information, legislative, and grassroots support. In addition, the position will provide assistance to GAO governmental policy advocates who work on various legal and policy issues including business law, federal agency regulation of lawyers, attorney-client privilege, criminal justice reform, access to justice, veterans affairs, legal education, and state legislation. The position will also provide support to GAO’s grassroots and digital advocacy team.

 

Principal Duties/Job Responsibilities:

-Conducts legal, legislative, regulatory, and other research, and writes memoranda, articles for publication, reports, and correspondence.

-Performs meeting planning functions and assists with annual ABA Day in Washington and other grassroots lobbying efforts.

-Edits and proofreads ABA policy letters, statements, and other communications and transmits them to Congress, federal agencies, and ABA members.

-Drafts, updates, and posts materials on the GAO website and on social media platforms.

-Responds to information requests from congressional and agency offices and from ABA leaders and members.

-Provides administrative and programmatic support.

-Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree from four-year college or university.

 

Skills and Experience:

Excellent research and writing skills; 1-2 years writing and publication production experience; solid understanding of government and legislative processes; and strong working knowledge of Windows 10, Microsoft Office (including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint), other computer applications, social media, and the Internet. Top candidates will also have the ability to take initiative, work independently, and manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously; strong organizational and follow-up skills; accuracy and attention to detail in work products; a positive attitude, professional demeanor, and strong interpersonal skills. Interest or experience in congressional affairs and public policy, experience in an association or non-profit setting, and meeting planning experience are a plus.
