Home-based consultancy.

Duration: 90 days over the period from January till August 2021.

Purpose of Activity/Assignment:
The purpose of the assignment is to develop guidance & orientation packages on Focused non-specialized support for children and adolescents through group interventions.

Scope of Work:
Recent analysis within the global Child Protection Area of Responsibility (CP AoR) has shown that there is a gap in guidance, training, workforce and consequently service delivery on MHPSS layer 3 for children.
Currently, filling this gap has become crucial, as child protection actors involved in MHPSS aim to shift from primarily providing PSS activities, to providing social work support and services on level 3 of the MHPSS pyramid. This is also reflected in the recent guidance for humanitarian needs overview/humanitarian response planning for MHPSS elements of child protection as developed by the global CP AoR.

One of the strategies identified to fill the gap on MHPSS level 3 is working with “positive support groups” for children.
Working with positive support groups for children and adolescents is an evidence-based method that has proven to be effective in a variety of settings, and for a variety of issues. An “issue” is defined as an external cause of distress, e.g., a disease, a parental divorce, etc. Facilitators of positive support groups follow a curriculum or protocols of – for example – 10 sessions which provide a structure with a number of objectives.

The main objective is to enhance peer-to-peer learning in naming feelings and identifying coping strategies.
Groups typically range in size from 4 to 8 children. Facilitators can be non-specialized staff who have received training in the approach.

The scope of the work is:
  • Carry out a desk review of existing materials on working with children using positive support groups
  • Develop general guidance on how to set up and facilitate positive support groups
  • Develop ten curricula for positive support groups
  • Train five facilitators in using positive support groups
  • Facilitate field testing of the materials with the trained facilitators and adjust the material according to feedback gathered
  • Present the guidance to the child and family subgroup of the MHPSS RG and incorporate feedback in the guidance
  • Coordinate translation of materials into four languages
  • Ensure proper layout of the guidance materials in the four languages

The consultant will be supervised and will receive support from: MHPSS Specialist, global Child Protection Area of Responsibility and MHPSS Specialist, UNICEF
