The Communications Specialist – Gen U is primarily responsible for the preparation and implementation of Gen U’s communications strategy. They are expected to work with internal and external partners and stakeholders to ensure that communication is consistent with the goals, targets and priorities set in the programme of activities approved by the Board of Trustees and the Global Leadership Council of Generation Unlimited.
- Develop and track annual workplans, budgets and calendars in line with the communication and advocacy strategy.
- Oversee the development of strategic communicational and brand materials to promote Generation Unlimited, liaising with content production teams and identifying and managing vendors.
- Oversee the content creation and management of Gen U digital properties, including social media and web.
- Provide communication support for priority Gen U events, including Gen U Board Meetings and other key events identified annually.
- Develop and edit feature and news stories, blogs and web content.
- Ensure monitoring of implementation and effectiveness of the strategy, taking corrective action when and where necessary to minimize risk and maximize results.
- Prepare mid and annual reports on the strategy implementation, as well as reports on the results of priority activations and events.
- Build relationships with existing and potential contributors for communications outlets and provide leadership on engagement with non-traditional media.
- Ensure a regular flow of information to grow the partnership, using communications materials to encourage commitments, dialogue and engagement.
- Draft and elaborate communication materials, partnership tool kits, presentations, and other necessary engagement materials.
- Ensure the quality, consistency and appropriateness of communication materials and messages shared with partners.
- Work proactively with partners across GenU to identify opportunities for communication, advocacy, youth engagement and sharing information about major progress and results.
- Assist in the identification of opportunities for cooperation and potential contributions of Generation Unlimited partners and potential partners.
- Coordinate closely with the staff working within other technical areas of the Secretariat for synergies/ collaboration.
- Monitor, evaluate and share results and findings with partners of communication and advocacy strategy.
- Provide one-on-one support and technical guidance to countries implementing Gen U in all areas related to communication and advocacy.

Develop guidance and toolkits for countries to utilize in the localization and implementation of Gen U communication and advocacy.
- Design and implement capacity building and knowledge sharing opportunities for UNICEF offices, including face-to-face and online.
- Provide guidance and communication support for countries implementing the Youth Challenge.
- Lead on capacity building on advocacy for youth in prioritized countries to empower them to advocate for better opportunities for their generation.
- Oversee the design and implementation of content that features the views of young people on Gen U priorities and features young people engaged in Gen U leadership and initiatives (Young Board Members, Young People’s Action Team, Youth Challenge)
- Support the elective process to form the global YPAT; generate visibility opportunities for young board members
- Develop and implement an annual activation targeting young people on Gen U priority issues.

An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: international development, social sciences, business administration, management, communication, journalism, marketing or fundraising. A first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and 2 additional years of experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Five (5) years of progressively responsible of professional experience in communication strategy development andimplementation. Engagement with and partnership experience with the media sector is a strong asset.

Demonstrated experience in design and management of projects, including budget management and monitoring of results.

Experience in operating independently and in providing advice and support on advocacy and engagement campaigns.

Knowledge of international development, humanitarian issues and children’s rights.

Experience working for an advocacy or campaigning organization e.g. international or national NGO, UN or other multilateral organization.

Experience working in a developing and emergency environment is an asset.

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language or local language of the duty station is considered as an asset.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.
GEN U is hosted by UNICEF. The Fund is administered under UNICEF’s financial, human resources and administrative rules and regulations, while operations are run by the Fund’s own independent governance structure that provides strategic guidance and oversight to its investments. GEN U’s day-to-day activities are carried out by a Secretariat under the direction of the Education Cannot Wait Director.
If selected for this post, the resulting appointment will be limited to GEN U, a UNICEF hosted fund. While UN staff regulations and rules, as well as UNICEF policies and procedures, apply during the appointment, certain provisions therein may apply differently due to the limited scope of the appointment.
This applies equally to UNICEF internal candidates, if they are selected for and appointed to this post. The scope of their appointment will thereafter be limited to GEN U, and in order to return to a UNICEF appointment outside GEN U, they will need to be selected in a competitive recruitment exercise. In particular, they will not be eligible or subject to rotation exercise, conversion to a continuing appointment, or priority in selection process for UNICEF posts outside GEN U, during their appointment.
