The umbrella organization for civil society in Botswana, the Botswana Council of Non-Government Organisations (BOCONGO) has requested support through this project, to establish a civil society managed national database to assist in the coordination of civil society organisations, including but not limited to members of BOCONGO. Coordination of civil society’s engagement with human rights and the SDGs through a coordination database will reduce information asymmetry, increase transparency and allow better coordination and monitoring of human rights and SDG implementation in Botswana.
The database will also be an enabler for increased civil society engagement, inclusion and participation in important national development processes including the SDGs, national development planning and human rights recommendation implementation. The database will enable national actors supporting SDG implementation and monitoring processes and the follow-up to the HR mechanisms and recommendations to work in an integrated way. The database will also increase the profile of CSOs in Botswana and potentially enable improved partnerships (eg regional and international CSOs and development partners).
A consultant is therefore required to develop and support the roll out of a civil society managed coordination and planning database including human rights recommendations and SDGs. It is proposed that this database be developed and linked with any existing coordination database established by the National NGO Council to avoid duplication of data.
The database will also be linked with the Universal Human Rights Index (UHRI) website and national SDG indicators and targets so that civil society organisations can identify which recommendations and SDG targets and indicators they are contributing towards. This will enable improved planning and coordination for the implementation of the SDGs and human rights recommendations in Botswana and strengthened civil society human rights and SDG shadow reporting.
