Internship Summary
WRI is seeking an intern to support the Core Communications team to support our media relations, digital communications, webinars, presentations, and other duties. The position requires someone who has strong writing and oral communication skills. We are seeking someone who is creative, highly organized, and has a passion for communicating to various audiences. An interest in media, design, social media and other communications is a plus, especially experience with virtual events, webinars, and platforms such as Zoom and Teams. We are also looking for someone with a strong interest in environmental issues and/or international development. Candidates who have experience working with people from different cultures and/or international experience is also desirable.
Responsibilities
- Provide general communications support to the core communications team and programmatic areas, including writing, editing, media relations, webinars, presentations, and other tasks;
- Assist with media lists and research, including helping to organize and maintain WRI’s media database (Cision);
- Write and edit content for WRI.org’s website and blogs; and
- Provide administrative support to the team, including scheduling meetings, event logistics, note-taking, and other duties as required.
Learning Outcomes
The internship will gain experience in the following areas:
- You will work on a diverse set of communications professionals and interact with staff in different programs and international offices.
- You will learn about different international media outlets and reporters and strategies to reach them.
- You will get first-hand experience with social media and other communications channels.
- You will learn to juggle different projects and interact with staff at different levels within the organization.
- You will gain exposure to one of the leading global research organizations, with a focus on the environment and international development.
Internship Qualifications
- Pursuing or completed undergraduate or graduate degree in communications, journalism or public relations, international relations, or similar degree.
- Highly organized and ability to manage multiple projects at the same time;
- Strong communication skills, including written and oral communications;
- Prior experience with media databases like Cision are preferred but not required;
- Design skills, including Photoshop and Powerpoint are desirable; and
- An ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
General Internship Requirements
- Applicants must have personal health insurance coverage; and
- U.S. work authorization is required for this opportunity. WRI does not sponsor interns for visas.
Compensation
The pay range for this internship opportunity is between $15-18/hour, commensurate with qualifications.
Duration and Location
This is a six month, full-time internship with flexible start and end dates based on the candidate’s availability and need for the project. This is a remote-based internship with the option to work out of the Washington D.C. office once it reopens. WRI will provide a laptop for the duration of your internship.
