Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.
Context:
In 2015, IOM developed a Migration Governance Framework (MiGOF) to help define what “well-managed migration policy” might look like at the national level. The MiGOF was welcomed by IOM’s Member States the same year. The Migration Governance Indicators (MGI) were developed to assess national frameworks and help to operationalize the MiGOF.
The MGI is a tool based on policy inputs that helps countries assess the comprehensiveness of their migration policies and identify gaps and areas that could be strengthened. In addition, the MGI aims to advance conversations on migration governance by clarifying what “well-governed migration” might look like in the context of SDG Target 10.7.
IOM´s Department of International Cooperation and Partnerships (ICP) is responsible for supporting and coordinating IOM’s relations with governments, intergovernmental organizations, civil society and the media. ICP’s functions necessitate internal partnerships across the respective departments at Headquarters and IOM missions in the field.
Under the overall supervision of the Head of Multilateral Processes Division (MPD), and the direct supervision of the MPD’s MGI Project Coordinator, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the implementation of the MGI process through background research, production of visibility material and other related tasks.
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
- Conduct background research on the 40+ countries and cities participating to this year’s MGI project.

Produce regular updates on the socio-political developments in all countries and cities participating in the MGI project this year.

Support the production and updating of high-quality visibility and outreach material.

Support the development and maintenance of the MGI external SharePoint.

Assist in the organization of workshops and webinar related to the MGI project.

Assist in the preparation for and participate in internal meetings and draft notes for file.

Provide general support to the implementation of the MGI project, more specifically in the preparation of inter-ministerial consultations.

Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Training Components and Learning Elements
• The successful candidate will also gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.
• Gain experience in organization, management, and international cooperation activities.
• Become acquainted with the work on the Migration Governance Indicators
• The successful candidate will acquire technical knowledge in communications in the field of migration governance.
• S/he can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff.
• S/he will have the possibility to interact with numerous stakeholders, as well as with the internal and external partners involved in migration governance.
• S/he will gain extensive experience working in an international and multi-cultural environment.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
• Master’s degree in Migration Studies, Economics, Statistics, International Relations, Social Sciences, Development Studies, International Affairs or a related field from an accredited academic institution.
Experience
• Strong computer literacy;
• Excellent critical thinking and writing skills;
• Ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to deadlines;
• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;
• Graphic design skills will be considered an advantage.
Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Eligibility and Selection
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
c) are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor;
d) are either students approaching the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, or recently graduated, who have less than two years of relevant working experience;
e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.
