UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, an advocate

Solomon Islands is an island group comprising of 997 islands and atolls located in the Melanesian region of the Pacific. Solomon Islands has a population of about 700,000 and is one of the Pacific region’s fastest growing nations. While 80 per cent of the population lives in rural areas, the urban population is growing at 5 per cent per annum – more than twice the overall rate of population growth. Children and adolescents (0-19 years) make up around 50 per cent of the total population. Solomon Islands is highly prone to disaster and climate risks, including but not limited to tropical cyclones, tsunamis, floods, earthquakes and droughts.

How can you make a difference?

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) has embarked on an ambitious reform agenda focused on devolving health services to the provinces. The main driver to achieve this is the Role Delineation Policy (RDP), which is described as a ‘bold new plan’ that sets out a roadmap towards universal health coverage (UHC). The plan defines what services are to be offered at each of the four levels of the health system, from small rural health clinics offering basic primary health care (PHC) to area health clinics with simple surgical services, provincial hospitals, and the National Referral Hospital.

Despite this, there are concerns on the quality of PHC services provided. To that end, UNICEF conducted and collected data for a Service Provision Assessment Survey using the observations module and combined this with a community-based survey of knowledge of essential family practices. Due to the onset of COVID 19 data collection was halted with the vast majority of data points collected.

UNICEF is seeking a qualified consultant to work remotely to clean and analyze already collected data and collate a report on service quality for Solomon Islands.
