Legal and Compliance is responsible for managing all legal and regulatory matters, including contracts, corporate governance, general compliance, academic compliance, employment law matters, intellectual property, product counseling, government relations, and claims. The team includes dedicated teams that support every aspect of Coursera’s platform, including university, enterprise and industry partnerships.
As International Corporate Counsel, the successful attorney will take the lead on managing the Legal & Compliance team’s coverage of international corporate governance and new market expansion. The candidate will leverage their experiences and skills in consultation with outside counsel to implement robust governance processes for our international subsidiaries and branches, manage board activities, support HR, tax and finance initiatives and help drive market expansion through new entity formation. In addition, in partnership with employment counsel, the attorney will also ensure Coursera’s handbooks and other internal policies are appropriately localized and implemented with global teams outside of headquarters We’re looking for a team member who is passionate about business growth and education. We want a candidate who is energized by the challenges of growing a business globally and being a strategic business partner for a dynamic team experiencing rapid expansion. This role will engage with all levels of employees and management, so interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) are vital to strong working relationships.
Responsibilities:
- implement robust governance processes for our international subsidiaries and branches, manage board activities, support tax and finance initiatives
- Identify and manage local outside counsel to form new entities and set up the legal framework to competitively hire and retain local talent to meet Coursera’s expansion plans
- Ensure Coursera’s employee handbooks, compensation structures, templates, policies and processes are appropriately localized and implemented for global teams outside of headquarters, and comply with local law
- Proactively develop a thorough understanding of all aspects of the employee lifecycle in each proposed or existing location, and develop the tools and resources needed to function efficiently
- In partnership with the People and Finance teams, develop practical criteria and policies to guide international expansion decisions and employee mobility across jurisdictions
- Stay current with applicable laws, regulations and industry guidance that impact Coursera’s globally located teams and business practices
- On an as-needed basis, support the growth and operations of Coursera by providing counsel on potentially a wide variety of legal matters, in consultation with other members of the Legal and Compliance team and outside counsel
Basic Qualifications:
- Have a solid understanding of corporate governance, international new market expansion and corporate secretarial responsibilities
- 3+ years of relevant post qualification experience
- Demonstrated history in project management skills working with and influencing cross-functional teams
- Proficiency with G Suite and Microsoft Word
- Have integrity and a commitment to ethics
- Operate autonomously while being a team player who brings a positive, “can do” attitude to the workplace and works collaboratively with other members of the Legal and Compliance team and with internal clients
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior in-house experience at a global technology company
- Possess a practical approach to problem-solving and be able to counsel internal clients with clear, concise and creative advice to meet business needs
- Thrives in an ever-changing, start-up environment and works quickly under time-pressure deadlines
- Business Fluency in German or French a plus
