UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.  Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, hope.

Purpose and Objective:

UNICEF’s overall objective in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) is to contribute to the realization of children’s rights to survival, growth and development through support to programmes that increase equitable and sustainable use of safe drinking water, basic sanitation, and promote improved hygiene.

During the implementation of UNICEF’s current Strategic Plan 2018-2021 as well as the implementation of the new Strategic Plan 2022-2025 (which is being discussed now), UNICEF seeks to further improve its global WASH programme through improved knowledge and information systems for programme results and organizational efficiency and effectiveness. As UNICEF strengthens its position as a knowledge leader and advocate for children, it will require continued investment in knowledge-sharing, information management and sector capacity development. The WASH section has developed and rolled out its Global WASH Knowledge Management Strategy that defines KM as a management activity seeking to enhance the organization, integration, sharing and delivery of knowledge. To bring this about, the Strategy is organized around four strategic pillars:

  • Pillar 1. Improving our systems for generating knowledge – to apply appropriate methodologies and study designs focusing on services that impact children and improve and standardize quality assurance processes. To ‘know what we know’ and identify key knowledge gaps so that UNICEF can work to fill these.
  • Pillar 2. Improving our systems for customizing knowledge – to amplify the impact of our knowledge products by strengthening the link between their content and the intended audience; hence to produce ‘right sized’ and digestible knowledge in accessible formats for different audiences and strengthen corporate branding.
  • Pillar 3. Expanding our networks for dissemination, communication and advocacy of WASH knowledge, while providing opportunity to engage staff around knowledge, tools and KM systems to increase their uptake.
  • Pillar 4. Targeting capacity building efforts, to ensure the professional development needs of WASH staff are met and tools to achieve programme objectives are accessible.

The strategy is in full force now and an update of the current strategy is envisaged in 2021 to adapt to the new SP priorities as well as the changing global WASH landscape.

The purpose of the internship is to support global WASH knowledge management team in the strengthening of Pillar 2, 3 and 4 by consolidating our database of knowledge products developed and trainings delivered during the current SP period (2018 – 2021) at global, regional and country levels and develop and disseminate widely catalogue-style summary of key knowledge products (by themes) and trainings for external sharing and usage.
