Are you passionate about topics such as migration, refugees, and inclusion? Do you have experience or an interest in international law, international asylum systems, and client work? Have you got a great attention to detail? ORAM advocates for the protection of extremely vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers who are fleeing persecution based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity and expression (SOGIE). This Legal Internship gives you the opportunity to assist with our legal program based in Athens, Greece, and work directly with LGBTIQ asylum seekers seeking protection in Greece, as well as to conduct legal research on topics such as human rights, migration, refugees, and much more.

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Research Greek asylum system;

  • Conducting one-on-one client interviews;

  • Drafting legal documents to support asylum claims;

  • Conducting additional legal research as required.

DESIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

Desired Skills include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • A person who is interested in asylum and migration;

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;

  • Strong grasp of Greek and EU asylum law a plus;

  • Knowledge of French, Farsi and/or Arabic a plus;

  • Knowledge of issues facing LGBTIQ asylum seekers and refugees;

  • Ability to apply case facts to international refugee principles as applied by the UNHCR or by the relevant signatory state;

  • Strong research skills;

  • Empathy and professionalism;

  • Ability to work with international partners;

  • Ability to work remotely.

  • Discipline, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail required.

TIME COMMITMENT: We ask for a min of a 6-month commitment to build, implement and maintain programs.

HOURS: 20 hours/week, including weekly planning meeting with supervisor
