Position Summary

Under general direction of the Director of Academic Advising, advise students regarding academic and career concerns, articulation and other related services. Serve as a primary functional manager for the Starfish system and will provide other resources for student success.

Duties & Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assume primary responsibility of the Starfish retention software system for maximizing the success and retention of Hispanic, low-income, and at-risk students, anticipating, and evaluating likely needs and obstacles.

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop new data collection and reporting strategies as needed for Starfish deployment.

  • Inventory and evaluate current campus data sources for viability, accuracy, and inclusion in Starfish to optimize existing reports when possible.

  • Retrieve and analyze data to prepare and submit reports as needed by the Dean of Student Services, Division Chairs, the Executive Vice President, and other institution constituencies.

  • Assist in the identification of students for participation in Starfish cohorts.

  • Monitor cohort members’ progress in support resources on campus (advising, tutoring, financial aid), collect data required for program administration, grant reporting, and provide periodic updates to ensure program success.

  • Communicate with students when needed to provide information concerning enrollment and recommend appropriate intervention strategies to ensure continued progress or success.

  • Use a variety of computer software to organize retention resources and related data, compose and prepare correspondence, create reports, and other materials.

  • Solve minor technical issues with Starfish and other software systems.

  • Schedule, coordinate, conduct, and lead all Starfish team meetings and scheduled training to faculty and staff.

  • Provide academic advising for degree-seeking students ensuring that students are fully enrolled and meet class and graduation requirements.

  • This position requires strong customer service skills to assist the student population including at-risk students and the ability to use critical thinking skills to assess the need for services and address student concerns pertaining to student payment to remain registered in classes.

  • Provide initial advisement to students and/or potential students on college programs and services including course selection and class scheduling.

  • Participate and assist in the development and implementation of a variety of student development programs and college recruiting activities to attract and maintain students/potential students including special populations.

  • Assist students in assessing academic skills and interprets placement testing.  Contact students who have been determined to be academically at risk and design a program to improve academic success.

  • Provide students with information regarding other institutions and transfer requirements. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires frequent and continuous sitting/moving about, continuous use of fine motor skills, and pushing and pulling of up to 20 lbs.

SCHEDULE DETAILS:  

Must be available to work 40 hrs. per week with normal work hours from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

Minimum Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Proficiency in computer applications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • Course work in education, business, social science, or related area with minimum of two (2) year’s experience in higher education environment related to student development or counseling is preferred.

  • Experience in retention software to include trouble shooting, coding, and data collection and reporting preferred.
