The British Embassy in Tripoli has a vacancy for a Chief of Staff, job grade Executive Officer (EO), on a fixed-term contract basis for one (1) year.
Main purpose of the role:
This role is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of a friendly, high-performing team at the British Embassy in Tripoli.
The Chief of Staff provides high level executive and operational support to enable His Majesty’s Ambassador (HMA) and Chargé d’Affaires (CdA) to operate with maximum effectiveness.
The role is central to the smooth functioning of the Embassy. It centres on traditional executive support, including for official visits as well as Residence/events management, and diary management. It also requires a focus on internal coordination and effective information flow across the organisation.
The role acts as a trusted link between senior leadership and Embassy teams, ensuring priorities are communicated clearly and actions followed through.
Roles and responsibilities:
Support to HMA/ CdA
- Manage the diary of the Ambassador (or Chargé d’Affaires when the Ambassador is away), ensuring priorities are reflected and competing demands are managed effectively.
- Coordinate meetings and engagements, including briefing requests, attendance, logistics, travel arrangements and follow-up actions.
- Ensure senior leaders have the information, briefing material and practical support required for engagements and decision-making.
- Highlight clashes, dependencies or issues requiring attention and support effective prioritisation where required.
Cross-Embassy Coordination and Planning
- Act as a coordination point between HMA (or CdA when HMA is away) and Embassy teams, ensuring priorities, decisions and actions are communicated and followed through.
- Work across sections to support delivery of senior leadership priorities and maintain effective communication across the mission.
- Support forward planning by maintaining visibility of upcoming engagements, priorities, deadlines and actions requiring coordination.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships across the Embassy, with diplomatic missions, government entities and relevant Libyan official offices.
- Maintain key contacts, background information and institutional knowledge to support continuity, particularly during leadership transitions.
Programmes, Visits and Engagements
- Coordinate engagement programmes, including official meetings, introductory programmes, representational activity and key stakeholder engagement.
- Support other teams to deliver inward and outward VIP and official visits, including programme planning, logistics, visas, briefing coordination, access arrangements and liaison with relevant teams.
- Support other teams when they are producing official programmes and visits outside Tripoli.
- Maintain stakeholder contacts and engagement information to support continuity and effective planning.
Residence and Official Events
- Manage the Ambassador’s Residence programme and support official events and receptions.
- Coordinate guest lists, invitations, catering requirements, protocol considerations, access arrangements and event logistics.
- Support planning, forecasting and management of Residence event requirements and associated expenditure.
- Work closely with the Corporate Services Manager, catering service provider, security colleagues and relevant Embassy teams to ensure events are delivered to a high standard.
- Coordinate security access arrangements for guests by working with relevant security colleagues and communicating requirements clearly.
Onboarding, Knowledge Management and Corporate Support
- Support onboarding and induction of new colleagues, helping them access key contacts, information and ways of working.
- Support smooth transitions for incoming senior leaders by maintaining continuity, institutional knowledge and awareness of ongoing priorities and commitments.
- Maintain shared resources, stakeholder information and Embassy Teams pages to support continuity and knowledge management.
- Support Embassy events, commemorations, staff engagement activities and wider corporate initiatives.
- Provide office management support where required.
The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required.

Eligibility
- Applicants must have the right to live and work in Libya and will need to be cleared for security purposes by the UK Government.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Excellent organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, coordinate multiple workstreams and maintain oversight of complex or fast-moving issues.
- Experience of working in Libya and engaging with Libyan government officials and external stakeholders, with the ability to represent and articulate the Ambassador’s views accurately and professionally.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in both English and Arabic, with the ability to draft clear, concise briefing material, correspondence and corporate communications for senior leaders.
- A team player with proven ability to build effective working relationships across diverse teams and stakeholders, exercising tact, discretion and sound judgement when handling sensitive information.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records, track actions and ensure timely follow-up on decisions and commitments.
- Confident user of Microsoft 365 applications (particularly Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and able to use digital tools to improve team effectiveness and information management.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision, showing initiative, resilience and adaptability in a dynamic operational environment.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Experience of supporting senior leadership teams, management boards or executive committees.
- Experience of coordinating corporate functions such as planning, visits, events or crisis response.
- Understanding of diplomatic / international organisation operations and business.
- Experience of working in a multicultural environment and building effective relationships across different grades, professions and backgrounds.
- Knowledge of project or programme management approaches and the ability to coordinate delivery across multiple teams.

Working hours and remuneration:
The British Embassy in Tripoli offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable salary of USD 2,180 per month inclusive of all allowances. INAS deductions will be applied.
This position is for a full-time employment, on a fixed-term basis for one (1) year. The successful candidate will be subject to a one thirty (30) working days probationary period. The appointment will also be subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances.
Conditioned working hours are 40 hours gross per week. Standard working hours are from 08:00-16:00 from Sunday to Thursday. The role is a full-time position based in Tripoli. The jobholder will be expected to be available to work from the British Embassy to Tripoli’s office, and travel using personal transport to meetings in locations in the city.
Flexible working is also permitted, allowing the jobholder to work-from-home occasionally in agreement with their line manager.

The recruitment process, including security clearance, is expected to take around two-three months. The security clearance process includes checks available in country and with UK, dependant on the security level required for the role and the candidates’ profile and UK footprint.
