Fishers Island Seagrass Management Coalition
Internship Duration: May – October 2026
Internship Responsibilities:
- Lead the Seagrass Monitoring Interns in field data collection activities, including eelgrass sampling, monitoring water quality, and mapping areas of seagrass.
- Accurately enter data collected throughout all monitoring projects
- Analyze ground truthing videos and create a QGIS project displaying the analysis
- Produce an independent research project on an aspect of FISMC’s monitoring/research initiatives
- Participate in community outreach events, helping to communicate FISMC’s mission and findings to the public.
- Follow established safety protocols while conducting fieldwork on land and in water.
Qualifications:
- A graduate with a B.S. or M.Sc. degree in Marine Science or a related field.
- A strong interest in marine conservation and coastal ecosystems, particularly concerning Long Island Sound and seagrass habitats.
- Capable of working independently and as part of a team, demonstrating a proactive approach to tasks.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and participating in physical activities like paddleboarding and carrying equipment.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage and educate peers and the community.
- A boating license is required; experience in boating around Long Island Sound is desired.
Work Environment:
- The internship will take place primarily on Fishers Island – applicants should live on Fishers Island or have independent access to a boat so they can reach the island at any time.
- Interns should be prepared for a flexible schedule, including weekends, mornings/evenings for fieldwork.
