Social Scientist for Socio-Ecological Conflict Transformation in Mining (f/m/x)  

Your tasks

• You actively contribute to the further development and implementation of the Mining Pastoral’s strategy.
• You analyze the socio-ecological impacts of mining on local communities and present the findings in an accessible way.
• You promote lobbying and advocacy processes and strengthen networking among the involved groups and organizations.
• You systematically compile national and international experiences on the protection of water and biodiversity for the deduction of best practices and lessons learnt.
• You develop educational approaches and design materials for environmental education initiatives.
• You will be responsible for the proper expenditure and management of funds on site in accordance with donor guidelines and AGIAMONDO specifications. In doing so, you will work in partnership with colleagues from the partner organisation.

Your profile

• You hold an university degree in social or environmental sciences or a comparable field.
• You are well-versed in research on extractivism and socio-ecological conflicts and can clearly communicate complex issues.
• You have at least five years of experience in defending environmental rights and are committed to ecological justice.
• You bring practical experience in community work and environmental education and can inspire people toward sustainable solutions.
• You have an excellent command of Spanish, both spoken and written, and communicate confidently and sensitively in intercultural contexts.
• You hold a valid driver’s license and have driving experience.
• You are an EU or Swiss citizen. You identify with Christian values as well as with the goals and concerns of church development and peace work.

The Archdiocese of Santa Fé de Antioquia faces major challenges due to the complex impacts of mining. To safeguard water and biodiversity and strengthen affected communities, the Mining Pastoral as part of Caritas is to be strategically expanded. Your work will include documenting the socio-ecological consequences of extractivism particularly of illegal gold miningas well as supporting lobbying and advocacy processes. In addition, environmental education initiatives will be developed and materials created to empower people to actively advocate for their rights and their environment.

Santa Fé de Antioquia is a charming, tourist-oriented district capital with around 19,000 inhabitants and a pleasant tropical climate. The city is located just about 1.5 hours from Medellín and offers all essential facilities such as a hospital, schools, and shopping options. The security situation is generally good, and the Church and its staff continue to enjoy high esteem. Leisure opportunities in town are limited, but the proximity to Medellín provides a wide range of cultural and social activities.
