Main purpose of job:
The Governor’s Office sits in Government House in Stanley. Your role is to support the Governor of the Falkland Islands, who is also His Majesty’s Commissioner for South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands.
Government House is a small, friendly, multicultural team working to deliver the objectives of three distinct governments: the Falkland Islands, South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands and the UK. We work closely with a wide range of stakeholders, including Members of the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Executive and senior UK military officers.
You will provide efficient, confidential and professional administrative day-to-day administrative support to the Governor’s Office, including the effective management of the Governor’s diary and support in the delivery of Government House events.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Diligent and sensitive management of the Governor’s diary. 20%
- Preparing and organising paperwork for the Governor, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality. 15%
- Acting as the first point of contact by greeting all guests to the Government House office in a professional and welcoming manner. 5%
- Answering the Government House main phoneline and handling enquiries efficiently and courteously. 10%
- Monitoring and managing the Government House inbox, ensuring timely responses and appropriate escalation where necessary. 10%
- Receiving direction from the Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer on upcoming events and guest lists, managing the timely distribution of invitations. 5%
- Distributing invitations for all Government House events and tracking responses. 5%
- Creating and printing events-related materials such as place cards and menus. 5%
- Working closely with the Residence Manager to support the planning and delivery of events. 5%
- There will be regular hours however you will be asked to work evenings, weekends and sometimes bank holidays, for which you will be compensated appropriately. 5%
- Being a member of such a small team requires you to chip-in far beyond your specific role, which gives you a breadth experiences and the opportunity to develop new skills. 15%

Working at Government House you are a visible representative of Government House to a wide range of stakeholders and customers including the Falkland Islands Government, local community, MoD and others. As one of a small team, you will need to ‘muck-in’ flexibly switching quickly between a wide range of tasks and back again several times a day, which is rewarding as you can often “see” the result of your efforts.
We are looking for someone who is:
- Excellent verbal and written communication – ability to express ideas and impart key messages clearly, concisely and effectively.
- Good skills with Microsoft Office products, particularly Outlook, OneNote and Word.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- High degree of discretion and sound judgement.
- Strong organisational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritise multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
- Able to work constructively and positively with others (both within your own and with other teams) to get things done delivered as well and being willing do get involved yourself.
- Capacity to multi-task and prioritise workloads, including resolving conflicting priorities.

Desirable:
- 2 years relevant experience of working with senior staff in a similar capacity.
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent work experience working at a similar level.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and influence effective relationships with stakeholders, including staff, Elected Members, external partners etc.

Candidates must have the legal status to live and work in Falkland Islands at time of application.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
The nature of Government House’s work, the significant representational load, including evenings and at times weekends, means staff are required to be highly flexible utilising TOIL (time off in lieu).
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.
