Main purpose of job:
The main purpose of the job of the Assistant to the HMRC Fiscal Crime Liaison Officer (FCLO) is supporting and assisting the FCLO in achieving their objectives as set by HMRC and in maintaining and strengthening the relationship between host agencies and HMRC.
This involves providing essential administrative and logistical support to the HMRC FCLO’s work in respect of the pursuit of criminal finances and other assets and reducing threats to UK tax regimes from organised crime, tax avoidance and evasion.
The Assistant to the FCLO (AO) will normally work under the supervision of an Office Manager (EO) in the same or a regionally proximate mission.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Conduct office administration duties under the instructions of the FCLO and Office Manager (EO), Higher Officer and Senior Officer, in accordance with policy and standard operating procedures. Duties include: records management, vehicle management, maintaining office accounts, maintenance of the asset register and gifts and hospitality register.
- Planning travel and visits to and from post; and lead on organising events as directed by FCLO’s.
- Support the Office Manager (EO) in preparing briefings as directed, including regular monthly management reporting.
- Under the supervision of the Office Manager (EO), provide open source (Tier 1) research support, especially exploitation of information sources in host languages.
- Monitor FCLO office mailbox and telephone so that messages are responded to in a timely fashion and / or directed as required.
- Support broader corporate / embassy work as directed by the FCLO and Office Manager (EO), especially during any crisis response.
- Participate in wider Mission’s initiatives as required, including engaging in a corporate role.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:
- fluency in English, both spoken and written (minimum C1 level according to the CEFR*).
- Demonstrated experience in office administration, with responsibility for routine and complex tasks.
- Strong IT proficiency, including confident use of MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint (Microsoft Office).
- Proven experience liaising professionally with senior stakeholders or leadership teams.
- Experience coordinating and supporting projects, events, or high‑level meetings.
- Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage competing deadlines.
- Ability to spot inefficiencies and propose practical improvements to administrative processes.

This is a permanent full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week.
The monthly gross salary for this position is € 4,608.49, AO level. In addition, we offer an extensive salary package, which includes a 13th month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, optional hospitalisation insurance (subject to monthly employee contribution), reimbursement of public transport and a lot more. We offer more days of annual leave than the Belgian requirements.
Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.
The starting date will be agreed between the parties.
Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.
The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.
Passport: officers are expected to be in possession of a passport due to the possibility that they may be asked to undertake business travel.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country.
Working patterns: Willing to occasionally work out of hours, evenings or weekends.
Learning & Development: Internal HMRC training will be provided, including access to the Intelligence Foundation Course.
This role includes a reserve period of 12 months. If a similar role becomes available during this time, appointable candidates may be considered in merit order without the need to reapply.
