This is an exciting opportunity at the heart of the growing UK-Brazil collaboration on Climate: forests and sustainable land use. You will be part of the International Climate Finance (ICF) team in the British Embassy, working closely with diverse UK Government Departments as part of the International Forests Unit.
The two roles will manage ICF forest and land use programmes and support their integration with policy initiatives in Brazil. You will be part of the AFOLU (agriculture, forest and land use) team and your work will strengthen the UK-Brazil Partnership on Green and Inclusive Growth (GIG).
Brazil is a major recipient of ICF, and you will help to drive the impact of this funding by managing and providing strategic inputs into programmes and projects such as:
- Amazon Fund which is a financial mechanism to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.
- Jurisdictional REDD+ programmes such as REM (REDD Early movers) in Acre and Mato Grosso.
- LEAF coalition which aims to raise and deploy the finance needed to tackle deforestation by making tropical forests worth more alive than dead.
- Mobilising Finance for Forests (MFF) programme aiming to reduce deforestation either create value from standing forests and/or incorporate forest protection into agricultural production.
- Investment in Forests and Sustainable Land Use (IFSLU) Phase2 – by building private investment markets that support the development of new business models which provide jobs and livelihoods while protecting and restoring forests
- UK contribution to Amazon Bioeconomy and Forest Management Multi-donor trust fund (AMDTF), aiming to assist Amazon countries in reducing pressure on forest ecosystems by improving environmental governance and fostering sustainable economic alternatives.
- UK PACT forest portfolio including projects on Bioeconomy with national and sub-national level (Para), restoration project working with Min of Environment, Forest concession, MRV, IPLC and forest finance.
After the selection of two Forest Managers, the forest portfolio mentioned above will be split according to both experience and skills.
1. ICF Portfolio management (50%)
- Monitor and manage programmes of the ICF forest portfolio. This includes ensuring delivery partners are meeting agreed objectives, local and global results are maximised, risks are controlled, stakeholder management at diverse levels and proper visibility to ICF results. Help programmes exceed expectations: e.g., by building greater political momentum; integration with other policy and finance initiatives; and better outcomes for businesses and private investors.
- Leverage the ICF portfolio of programmes to develop effective relationships with the Brazilian federal and state Governments, private sector stakeholders, civil society and Indigenous Peoples organisations.
- Representative of IFU in Brazil, engaging across UK government departments (such as FCDO, DESNZ, DEFRA) and coordinate engagements between the UK government and Brazil stakeholders
- Work with other donors, government entities and regional stakeholders to effectively raise the profile of agriculture, forests, land use (AFOLU) programmes, supporting key events to showcase our work to reduce deforestation and increase the value of standing forests, enhancing the UK’s position as a major partner of strategic importance.
- Support the development of a pipeline of potential new investment options that could deepen the UK and Brazil GIG partnership. Influence key organisations and individuals to help shape the initiatives and explore synergies among forest and other areas across the Embassy (such as science, trade).
- Lead on the preparation and coordination of key visits (monitoring missions to Brazil; ministerial visits) and senior-level meetings ensuring visibility to our programmes profile.
2. Integrate programme and policy initiatives (50%)
- Monitor and assess potential policy barriers and opportunities to boost ICF profile in country and strengthen forest pillar under the UK-Brazil GIG partnership.
- Regularly communicate Brazilian policy changes in a concise manner to UK-based colleagues especially International Forest Unit and participate in the main forest and land use discussion forums in Brazil.
- Provide advice and insights to ensure effective development and delivery of projects. This includes reporting and gathering intel – to identify interlinkages across the AFOLU and water portfolio
- Ensure coherence among forest and land use policy and programmatic initiatives and the Embassy Business Plan, including leveraging the programme impacts to boost growth opportunities for UK.
- Proactively seek collaboration opportunities amongst Embassy initiatives to support the UK’s mission in country by e.g., ensuring finance and policy initiatives interact effectively across UK Departments.
- Ensure alignment with regional forest initiatives and regional forest teams to boost UK impact in the Region.
- Publicly represent the Embassy and UK government as a credible interlocutor.
- Play an active part in the corporate life of the Embassy (potentially also as a member of Embassy Committees) to maximise the overall well-being of staff.

- At least 5 years of relevant professional experience.
- Bachelor’s or master’s Degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Proven project management skills.
- Experience of strategic working on international climate and sustainable land use issues.
- Networking skills, comfortable working with a wide range of domestic and international stakeholders, from both government and industry.
- Proven ability to write fluently and persuasively in English about technical and policy issues for a senior UK audience.
- Excellent organisation skills, with an ability to analyse complex issues, prioritise, and develop strategy.
- Able to work at a fast pace in a complex and changing environment using own initiative.
- Self-directed, able to create a plan, prioritise initiatives and execute independently and in collaboration with others, to agreed deadlines.
- Ability to work well and have a flexible approach to work whilst under pressure; team player, driven by collaboration.
- Demonstrable interpersonal and relationship skills, and the ability to influence others.
Language requirements:
Language: English and Portuguese
Level of language required: Expert English and Portuguese (spoken and written).

- Strong knowledge of Brazilian climate, environment, forest, AFOLU and related institutional frameworks.
- Experience of international programmes and climate finance.
- Strong network of contacts in the forests, climate and sustainable land use sector in Brazil.
- At least 3 years’ experience of developing and delivering major forest and climate programmes e.g., Environmental Science, Public Policy, International Development, International Business/Relations or related course.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
