Main purpose of job
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) at the British Embassy in Panama City is seeking a full‑time Intern to join its dynamic trade team. This opportunity is ideal for a motivated individual with a strong interest in international commerce and a desire to learn in a multicultural environment.
The Intern will report to the Export Campaigns Manager and work closely with the Regional Director for Central America and the Dominican Republic. The role will support the team’s core objective of promoting trade and facilitating business opportunities for UK companies across Panama and Central America.
Roles and responsiblities
Export Campaigns & Market Support
- Support the trade team in delivering the objectives of priority export campaigns across Panama and Central America.
- Assist with market research and help maintain up‑to‑date intelligence across multiple sectors in Central America, identifying trends, opportunities, and barriers to trade.
- Support Export Campaigns Managers in the planning and delivery of trade missions, official visits, and promotional activities.
Stakeholder Engagement & Events
- Coordinate meetings with public‑ and private‑sector stakeholders, including scheduling, confirmations, and follow‑up communications.
- Job shadow DBT Export Campaigns Managers in meetings, acting as a note‑taker and supporting the preparation of briefings, readouts, and action points.
- Support the organisation and delivery of DBT‑led and cross‑Mission events, including guest list management and RSVP tracking.
Administration, Information & Communications Support
- Maintain and update stakeholder information in CRM systems, ensuring accurate and timely record‑keeping.
- Prepare agendas, one‑pagers, briefing packs, programmes, and logistical materials for official visits and commercial activities.
- Collaborate with new ideas, directions, and tools for communications that facilitate the completion of the team’s objectives.

- Recently completed or towards completion of a first-level/bachelor’s university degree, preferably in related fields (e.g. Business Management, International Relations, Law, Marketing or Industrial Engineering).
- fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish.
- IT proficient (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Research, analytical, and writing skills.
- Academic GPA of 2.00 (of 3.00) or higher or equivalent.
- Enthusiastic and willing to learn.
- Ability of work independently with little supervision and pro-actively to complete assignments.
- Team player and customer service oriented.
- Excellent time management skills and attention to detail.
- Legal status to live and work in Panama in your own right, from time of Application.

The successful candidate must be Panamanian or have a valid and current Work Permit through Ministry of Labour at the time of application and be able to provide it when requested by Embassy. The British Embassy – Panama City does not sponsor work permits.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.

Working patterns
This internship is in-person and full-time at 37 hours per week. Office hours in the Embassy are 8am-5pm Monday to Thursday and 8am-1pm on Fridays. Please note this internship requires occasional out of hours work, sometimes working late nights due to official events and networking receptions.
