The British Embassy in Rome is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas, and it is now looking for a Driver to join its Defence Section.
Main purpose of job:
The job holder will work as part of a high performing team and will provide a high standard of transport and logistics to the Defence Attachés in Rome, VIPs and other staff as operational needs require. Core duties include driving, office and computer-based tasks as well as providing administrative assistance to the Defence Section of the Embassy. A key part of this role entails traveling outside the region of Rome, which may require occasional overnight stays.
Roles and responsibilities:
- General driving duties
- Undertake all driving responsibilities issued by the Defence Team, including delivery and collection of passengers and diplomatic bags, mail and documents as well as any ad-hoc driving requirements;
- Plan and research routes to destination to ensure fast and effective journey;
- Complete journey record sheets including miles covered and petrol purchases;
- As this is a customer-facing role, often dealing with VIP passengers, drivers are expected to maintain a neat and professional appearance by wearing appropriate attire.
2. Office and administrative tasks
- As part of the Defence Section, conduct administrative tasks (e.g. produce the driving programme, process diplomatic clearances, liaise with Italian authorities);
- Support the Defence Section in delivering UK MOD mandated administration;
- Attend team meetings as necessary;
- Contribute to logistics and delivery of high-level visits, such as booking accommodations, creating cost-effective logistics plans.
3. Care of vehicles
- Ensure the vehicles are always in order and serviced;
- Conduct regular checks of tyre pressure, hydraulic fluid, oil, battery level and fuel;
- Identify any defects as early as possible and keep any potential risk to a minimum level;
- Ensure vehicle maintenance, servicing, and insurance renewal as necessary.

Our ideal candidate shows:
- Full written and spoken proficiency in Italian at a minimum C1 level, according to CEFR*;
- Written and spoken proficiency in English at a minimum B1 level, according to CEFR*;

Valid EU driving license and a minimum of 2 years of driving experience;
- Knowledge of wider Italy road/motorway system and the ability to use relevant technology for driving purposes;
- Ability to work under pressure and as part of a team;
- Good communication skills and ability to manage internal and external relationships with a variety of stakeholders including senior officers;
- Strong time management skills;
- Ability to prioritise and coordinate competing and complex requirements;
- Well-developed sense of safety, presentable appearance and a service and customer-focused approach;
- Good IT skills with knowledge of the full MS Office package.

This is a full-time, permanent position, graded S1 according to the FCDO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is Euro 2,516.50. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including €10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.
Working hours are 40 hours (net) per week, typically from Monday – Friday within the range 08:00 – 20:00 , with some flexibility. Some work outside of standard working hours, including weekends, may be required and is compensated with overtime payment or time off in lieu.
The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of a 4-month probationary period. The starting date may be delayed depending on circumstances at the time and this will be agreed with the selected candidate.
Mandatory training is required upon the successful candidate’s appointment, including data management, security and health and safety.
All staff employed by the British Embassy are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF). However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.”
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy Rome are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.
