Who are we?
The British Embassy in Ankara is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We are now seeking to recruit a full‑time Defence Section Driver.
Main purpose of the job:
This is a key role within the Defence Section (DS), providing vital support to the Defence Attaché (DA) and the wider DS team. The position combines both driving and administrative duties, including the upkeep of the section vehicle, completion of MOD‑specific documentation, and ensuring the smooth running of the DS’s daily activities.
Given the diplomatic nature of the work, this is a prestigious post that plays an important part in the operational integrity and security of the DS, especially during driving tasks and representational duties. The ideal candidate will demonstrate consistent professionalism, discretion, flexibility, and reliability. Alongside excellent driving skills and strong knowledge of local routes, the role requires a strong sense of duty and integrity befitting diplomatic engagements.
The position also offers opportunities for overtime, including occasional overnight travel in line with UK MOD and Turkish duty‑driving regulations, so the successful candidate should be willing and able to travel outside Ankara — for example, to Istanbul and other locations as needed.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation for the Defence Attaché (DA), Defence Section (DS), official visitors, and delegations to meetings, official engagements, and events as required.
- Ensure the vehicle is properly maintained, including routine checks, cleanliness, maintenance scheduling, and accurate completion of all required UK MOD vehicle records and usage reports.
- Coordinate closely with the DS to manage, adjust, and confirm travel schedules.
- Use maps and GPS systems to plan routes, avoid traffic, and ensure punctual arrival at all destinations.
- Maintain strong security awareness at all times and apply defensive driving techniques.
- Uphold strict confidentiality regarding the DA’s activities, personal information, and any sensitive conversations overheard during duty.
- Support daily administrative tasks such as running errands and delivering correspondence or documentation to designated locations.
- Communicate effectively with Host Nation (HN) partners to confirm accurate collection and drop‑off points.
- Assist the DA with representational duties when required.
- Liaise professionally with all internal and external stakeholders.
- Maintain a neat, tidy, and appropriate appearance while on duty; an allowance toward suitable attire will be provided in line with UK MOD policy.
- Use FCDO IT systems and applications to check work schedules, communicate with the line manager/DS team, and complete required FCDO training as directed.
