Main purpose of internship
The British Embassy Santiago is pleased to offer a six-month internship, running from 28th September 2026 until 31st March 2027. The internship’s successful candidate will have the opportunity to work primarily with the Head of Energy, Environment & Critical Minerals. Additionally, through the cross-cutting nature of the work, the candidate will work with other team members who cover areas such as Science, Technology and Innovation, Economy, Health and Programme Management.
The intern will support the research and analysis of topics such as critical minerals, energy security and transition, renewables, carbon pricing instruments, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards and permitting. Additionally, the intern will have the opportunity to contribute to the Embassy’s operations, logistics, events and administrative processes.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn about foreign policy, international relations and natural resources governance, and how the UK and Chile work together to solve global challenges. Our interns play an important role in supporting our daily work and have an opportunity to make a real impact through the projects they will work on.
Roles and responsibilities
The Intern will:
- Support implementation of the British Embassy’s policy and diplomatic engagement focused on Energy, Environment and Critical Minerals: researching information and contacts (UK and Chilean) in priority areas, including political and legislative developments based on the Country Plan.
- Assist with activities needed by the Prosperity team: maintaining and updating our stakeholder database; arranging, attending and taking minutes in external meetings; attending and contributing to Embassy working groups; agenda management; update and maintain section resources and briefings.
- Support project and event management logistics, helping deliver exciting and impactful events (programmes for visiting UK officials and ministers, events focused on energy, environment and critical minerals, the King’s Birthday Party), as well as other Embassy and UK strategic priorities, including contact with suppliers and venues, and updating and maintaining briefing materials and guest lists and sending out invites.
- Support the British Embassy communications team strategy by contributing to the production of social media content of the Prosperity team’s events, visits, projects, activities etc.
- Assist with information management and record keeping following FCDO principles.
- Assist in the updating of current databases and actively contribute to the strengthening of relationships with stakeholders and suppliers.
- Learn and use our internal AI system to support the improvement of daily operations within the team and the Embassy.

- Enrolled in a Chilean university programme (either bachelor’s or master’s) throughout the duration of the internship (28th September 2026 until 31st March 2027), that will allow them to participate in an internship/“práctica profesional”.
- Polished communication and interpersonal skills, including customer service. Team player.

- Ability to complete and prioritize multiple tasks with short deadlines.
- Problem-solving, attention to detail, and efficient administrative skills.
- Ability to work evenings, occasionally when needed, as the Embassy hosts events.

- Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Chile in their own right, from time of Application.

- We are looking for proactive individuals who have general interest/experience in energy, environment and/or mining; and who are knowledgeable in international instruments such as the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
- Applicants should have a general understanding of Chile’s political environment and context, and have strong organisational, collaboration, problem-solving, communication and administrative skills to manage simultaneous ongoing tasks.
- Familiarity with media tools and applications would be beneficial.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Learning and development
The intern will have the opportunity to take part in the Embassy’s learning and development activities such as offerings under the Climate Directory or Intro to FCDO, where applicable and interested.

Working patterns
The internship is offered on a part-time basis, with a commitment of 20 hours per week to accommodate the applicant’s study schedule. While flexible working arrangements are available, the successful candidate will be expected to work on-site for a minimum of 60% of their contracted hours. The Embassy’s standard opening hours are Monday – Thursday 09:00 – 17:30, Friday 09:00 – 13:00. Please note that occasional out-of-hours work may be required (e.g. supporting on evening events).
