Who are we?
The Office of the Governor of Gibraltar is part of the worldwide FCDO network, representing British political & economic interests overseas and is currently looking for an External Affairs and Media Officer. The role would particularly suit a recent graduate looking for a broad introduction into the world of government and media.
Main purpose of job:
The main purpose of the role is to support the Governor of Gibraltar in fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities. This will involve working closely with the Governor to design and deliver campaigns, visits and events with an accompanying digital communications for the local community. It will also involve a minor role of oversight of security at the Governor’s work and residence (‘The Convent’).
On the job training will be provided. You will be supported by an experienced Line Manager and will work closely with the Governor.
Roles and responsibilities:
Public Engagement & Protocol [50%]
- Work closely with the Governor’s Personal Assistant (PA) in scheduling events and take the planning through to execution;
- Accompany the Governor on his public visits and events and where required, take forward any actions with the wider Policy team;
- Assist with inward routine visits on a daily basis, scheduling with the PA, enabling access escorting guests and taking notes as required;
- Oversee the planning and execution by the Residence staff of public events (e.g., King’s Birthday Garden Party, citizenship ceremonies);
- Lead on official visits to Gibraltar (e.g. FCDO Ministers and Officials), in cooperation with the Government of Gibraltar.
Comms & Media [25%]
- Develop engaging digital content to communicate the Governor and wider team’s work and monitor the effect of engagement;
- Issue press releases from the Convent and invitations to local media, as well as being the focal point for media questions;
- Produce daily press summary and media analysis, advising on both messages and means by which to communicate.
Policy & Liaison [20%]
- Participate in the Governor’s Policy Team, understanding the wider objectives of the UK Government and the Government of Gibraltar;
- Serve as the principal point of contact with the Office of the Chief Minister (No. 6), British Forces Gibraltar and Royal Gibraltar Police;
- Broaden the Convent’s range of political and business connections, especially in under-represented areas of the community.
Security [5%]
- Act as the focal point for the Convent’s contracted security guards, ensuring access is enabled for visitors and any other issues.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:
- fluency in English, both spoken and written at a minimum C1 level according to the CEFR*;
- Good knowledge of Gibraltar’s government, public and private sector and local community and media, including social media.
- Good communication skills, both written and oral and the ability to communicate with the media and on social media.
- Enthusiastic, energetic and creative team player who is interested at working at the strategic level;
- Organisational skills, attention to detail and ability to work under supervision to meet deadlines;
- Ability to build relationships, as well as having influencing skills to engage with stakeholders at different levels.

This is a full-time position with an initial fixed term contract of 24 months of 41 (gross) working hours per week.
The successful candidate will receive an annual salary of £29,711 gross (paid in 12 instalments).
The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check, security clearance and a probation period of six months.
Staff recruited locally by the Office of the Governor in Gibraltar is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local employment law.

Working Patterns: This role will offer flexible working of 41 hours per week. Flexible work schedule should be first agreed with Line Manager.
