Main Purpose of Job:
The Communications Officer will deliver professional and effective handling of Japanese/international media in order to generate measurable engagement and high-impact coverage that promotes the UK’s priorities in Japan and improves perceptions.
Working under the direction of the Head of Media the job holder will work closely with relevant Japan Network teams to leverage traditional and new media. They will proactively contribute to campaigns and plans and lead activities beyond media engagement that help create impact and help the Japan Network reach its Country Plan objectives.

What the Jobholder will be Expected to Achieve:
Professional Press Handling & Media Relations:
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with Japanese media and in-country media in print, broadcast and online.
- Respond to media enquiries and identify best media opportunities for senior management to deliver HMG messages (e.g. press conferences, media briefings, roundtables, luncheons, dinners).
- Lead on arrangements for media interviews, accompanying and supporting interviewees from the Japan Network and visitors such as VIPs.
- Arrange media calls for the Ambassador, Deputy Head of Mission, and senior management to maintain relationships with influential figures from media outlets in Japan.
Collaboration and Ownership:
- Working under the direction of Head of Press and Publications, actively support and advise others in the department with insight and contacts with media outlets, from news to features and specific thematic or niche areas relevant to Japan Network departments.
- Draft and contribute to press and media plans for campaigns and other communications plans with insight and ideas.
- Act as the focal point for press and communications action to deliver communications solutions. Attend regular meetings with sector teams and act as focal point and link for them and the wider Comms team.
- Draft copy, support colleagues to draft copy and create social media posts, publishing on relevant accounts with a focus on speed and accuracy.
Media Monitoring:
- Use online media and social media monitoring tools, to report on coverage and gain insight into perceptions of the UK on specific issues or themes.
- Produce clear and concise regular and ad-hoc media monitoring reports of coverage on Japan Network priority events and share with relevant sections.
Wider Team Support and Other Responsibilities:
- Work in sync with the other communications colleagues to share knowledge and cover relevant responsibilities/workload during busy periods or times of absence.
- Collaborate with team members in translation, proof-reading and copy editing.
- Support Japan Network priority moments such as VIP visits, large events and cross-team activities.
- Support during events or when needed with photography.
- Support the Strategic Creative Studio with simple video editing and subtitling when needed.

- キャンペーンや広報計画のためのプレス・メディアプランに、洞察やアイデアを提供して貢献する
- ジャパンネットワーク内の特定の部門チームにおけるプレス・コミュニケーション対応の中心的存在として、情報発信のソリューション提供を担う。関連分野のチームとの定例会議に出席し、他のチームとコミュニケーションチームの橋渡し役を務める
- 原稿作成およびSNS投稿を行い、適切なアカウントで発信する
メディアモニタリング
- オンラインメディアおよびSNSのモニタリングツールを使用し、報道内容や特定テーマに関する英国への見方・反応を把握する
- ジャパンネットワークの重点イベントに関する報道について、簡潔で分かりやすい随時レポートを作成し、関係部署へ共有する
チーム全体のサポートおよびその他の業務
- 他のコミュニケーションチームの同僚と連携し、知見を共有するとともに、繁忙期や不在時に互いの業務を補完する
- 翻訳、校正、コピー編集においてチームメンバーと協働する
- VIP訪問、大規模イベント、部門横断の活動など、ジャパンネットワークの重点取り組みをサポートする
- イベント時や必要に応じて、写真撮影に関するサポートを行う
- 必要に応じて戦略的クリエイティブチーム(Strategic Creative Studio)の業務を支援し、簡単な動画編集や字幕作成を担当する

- Knowledge of the Japanese media landscape, including good understanding of current digital media tools, channels and influencers is essential
- Competency in using and managing social media channels with a focus on speed and accuracy to ensure content remains current and relevant
- Strong writing skills and ability to convey messages in a clear and concise manner, even when content is complex or industry-specific
- Experience in delivering professional media events, briefings and interviews for business organisations
- Strong IT skills (Microsoft Office) with experience of working in an English speaking environment
- Country knowledge and proven ability to engage Japanese, UK and international audiences
- Able to perform ad-hoc translation
Language requirement:
This role requires written and spoken proficiency in both English and Japanese. fluency (minimum of C2 level for CEFR framework*) in one language and business level (minimum of high B2) in the other.

Working Patterns:
The British Embassy supports and promotes flexible working as a crucial part of our inclusive offering.
