Main purpose of job:
As part of the embassy Politics & Partnerships team you will be the lead for building the UK in Nepal understanding of Nepal’s internal and external politics and relationships. You will be responsible for explaining this to a range of audiences in the UK government to inform decision making; providing reporting and analysis on how this impacts our work in Nepal. You will be expected to build your own network of contacts to help ensure HMG has a detailed understanding of Nepal’s domestic and foreign policy, politics and regional relationships. Importantly you will be expected to ensure HMG is able to understand this, and any consequences for our work, across all UK interests and objectives (bilaterally, in development space, trade and defence issues). You will also be expected to be innovative and familiar with IT tools including appropriate use of AI in your work, and to flex, depending on British Embassy Kathmandu priorities – for example supporting comms activities, crisis work or visits.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
This role will be an important part of the work of the Politics and Partnerships team, reflecting the UK’s increasing engagement in the Indo-Pacific, and will help to ensure that HMG and colleagues across British Embassy Kathmandu to enhance UK understanding on Nepal’s internal politics as well as foreign policy.
Working with the Head of Political you will be the key person in British Embassy Kathmandu to explain the implications of Nepal’s internal politics and external relations to HMG work, including:
Network building and understanding politics: You will be expected to build and use your own network of contacts and relationships externally (in politics, academia, the international community, civil society and the media) to ensure you understand domestic politics and the role of Nepal’s external relations and implications for HMG. You will also need to guide, shape and prioritise wider embassy engagement with your network and wider contacts to inform your work and that of the embassy.
Reporting and analysis: You will lead on analysis and reporting on politics and external relations, including trends and developments, based on your engagement and analysis. This will be important to ensure colleagues in the embassy and wider FCDO network understand Nepal’s geopolitics. It will also help inform decision making, business cases, programme decisions and wider engagement across the embassy.
Ensuring Nepal’s external political issues are embedded in the work of the embassy: A key part of the job will be to work with other teams in the embassy to understand their priorities and political engagement to inform your own understanding and to help spot opportunities and risks that flow from Nepal’s domestic and foreign policy.
Influence activity: working with other teams you will work to ensure external political issues are factored into work across all teams.
Support wider political work and engagement: you will also need to be able to flex based on priorities in the embassy. For example surging to support visits or events, crisis work, providing wider political analysis and engagement.
Comms activity: working with the comms lead you will help to ensure BEK is explaining its work to a range of audiences and influencing views on UK in Nepal. This will include helping teams to shape their comms planning and producing content, including social media. As part of this you will also help with the Chevening Scholarship programme.

Essential on arrival:
Understanding of international relations and Nepali politics, ideally including a Bachelor’s degree in politics, international relations or other relevant field. Demonstrated track record of working on a relevant field for at least two years, ideally in government, an international organisation, NGO, academia or civil society. Ability to build a network of contacts in politics, academia, development partners, civil society and the media (with a track record of doing so in roles to date). Ability to use IT (including appropriate use of AI in your work) and written communication to explain complex issues to a wider audience demonstrated by relevant experiencein previous roles.

For British Embassy candidates, the Country Based Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.
Salary will be all-inclusive of NPR 206,836 per month plus 10% Provident Fund Contribution.

The British Embassy in Kathmandu is part of a world-wide network of 240 Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas.
No relocation or any other related costs or assistance will be provided. FCDO does not pay for any travelling, accommodation & relocation expenses incurred and/or accept any financial risk, including cancellation or reschedule costs.
