Main purpose of the role:
The British Embassy in Panama City is seeking a motivated and high-performing Political and Communications Intern to support the work of the Political and Communications Team.
The successful candidate will assist with political analysis, communications activity and reporting aligned with UK foreign policy objectives in Panama and the wider region. The role provides exposure to a broad range of embassy work, including digital communications, political reporting and public diplomacy, while offering valuable learning and professional development opportunities in an international diplomatic environment. The Intern will work closely with colleagues across the Political Section and wider Embassy, supporting both analytical and creative outputs that advance the Embassy’s priorities.
Roles and responsibilities:
Political Research and Analysis (30%)
- Conduct research and draft reports, briefings, and analysis on issues relevant to the British Government, including domestic politics, human rights, foreign policy, and regional developments.
Support political reporting to London and internal stakeholders.
Communications & Content Creation (30%)
- Contribute to brainstorming and development of communications strategies for Embassy campaigns.
- Produce engaging social media content, including filming, photography, basic audio/visual setup, and editing.
- Design graphics and edit video content for Embassy digital channels.
Monitoring, Events & Engagement (20%)
- Attend meetings, conferences, and events relevant to the Political Section (e.g. National Assembly sessions, academic events, seminars).
- Write concise summaries of internal and external meetings.
Public Diplomacy & Events Support (10%)
- Support planning, organisation, and delivery of Embassy-hosted events.
- Cover official events, including live social media posting and media engagement support.
Administrative & Team Support (10%)
- Provide general administrative support to the Political and Communications Team as required.

Essential on arrival:
- Strong written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish
- Computer literacy and confidence using digital tools
- Strong organisational and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small team
- Sound understanding of Panamanian domestic politics
- Strong graphic design and video editing skills (e.g. Canva, Adobe, CapCut, Instagram Reels)
- Creative and strategic thinking mindset
- Currently studying or recently completed a degree (junior level or above) in Political Science, International Relations, Communications, Law, or related field
Language requirements:
Proficiency in both English and Spanish

The successful candidate must be Panamanian or have a valid and current Work Permit through Ministry of Labour at the time of application and be able to provide it when requested by Embassy. The British Embassy – Panama City does not sponsor work permits.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g. some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second of subsequent candidate.

Office hours in the embassy are 8am-5pm Monday to Thursday and 8am-1pm on Fridays, though there is scope for flexible working arrangements, which can be agreed with the Line Manager. This role involves occasional evening work due to official events and receptions, agreed in advance with the Line Manager. This will be compensated with Time Off in Lieu.
