Who are we?
The British Embassy in Bucharest is part of the United Kingdom’s world-wide diplomatic network, and represents British political, economic and consular interests in Romania.
Main purpose of the internship:
We are now recruiting a Political Intern to join our Political Team for 12 months. The successful candidate will provide analysis on Romania’s domestic and foreign policy, engage on human rights topics and provide day to day support to the team, with opportunity to lead on their own projects and events. The successful candidate will receive mentoring from a British diplomat and be exposed to high-level events.
The job holder will have access to the extensive training and learning opportunities provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. The Embassy runs a vibrant peer to peer learning programme which includes lunchtime talks, specialist briefings and other opportunities for development. There is also the possibility of a familiarisation visit to London.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Work with UK and local colleagues and learn how an Embassy works;
- Support with reporting on internal politics and foreign affairs;
- Support with background research on human rights and other relevant policy topics;
- Support with arranging visits for UK officials to Romania;
- Support the organisation and delivery of events and meetings, including taking concise and accurate notes;
- Attend and report on political conferences and seminars;
- Compile and analyse political news;
- Manage political and NGO engagement lists;
- Support the team in delivering projects, with opportunities to lead your own initiatives;
- Translate from English to Romanian and vice versa as required;
- Provide cover for the Head of the Ambassador’s Office and be part of diplomacy in action, working with senior diplomats.

Essential on arrival:
- Full proficiency in Romanian and English (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level according to CEFR*);
- Strong oral and written communication skills;
- Good organisational skills and ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences;
- Demonstrated research experience in a professional or academic environment;
- An interest to develop by learning on the job;
- Good IT skills with the Microsoft Office package.

This is a full-time internship contract for 12 months (35 hours net per week). Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked. Standard working hours are: 08:30 – 17:00 Monday – Thursday; 08:30 – 13:30 or 11:00 – 16:00 on Friday.
The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Romanian / UK public holidays per year.
The monthly allowance is 4050 RON gross. Staff also receive a monthly subscription to a medical centre. The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance, and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of 30 working days.
All applicants should have a pre-existing legal status to live and work in Romania. The British Embassy does not facilitate/sponsor visa applications and work permits. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Romanian employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Romania and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country.
