The British High Commission in Nicosia is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is seeking to recruit a dynamic Political Officer to join our Political Section. This is a unique opportunity to work at the centre of the UK’s relationship with the Republic of Cyprus, contributing to some of the most significant political, security and policy priorities facing both countries.
In this role, you will lead engagement across a diverse portfolio, with a particular focus on justice and home affairs, transnational threats, national security, cyber security, organised crime, and counter-terrorism issues. You will work closely with colleagues across the FCDO, other UK government departments, and a wide range of external partners to support UK interests and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Main purpose of the job:
As Political Officer, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders across the Republic of Cyprus, including government ministries, law enforcement agencies, international organisations, civil society groups and diplomatic missions.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Build and manage a broad network of contacts to support UK policy priorities and objectives;
- Lead day-to-day engagement on justice, home affairs, national security and transnational threat issues, adapting priorities as UK interests evolve;
- Coordinate closely with UK government partners, including the Home Office, Ministry of Defence, HM Revenue & Customs and the National Crime Agency, to deliver a joined-up UK approach;
- Produce clear, insightful and high-quality reporting, analysis and policy advice, including Diplomatic Telegrams and briefing materials for senior decision-makers in Nicosia, the region and London;
- Identify opportunities to influence policy developments and support strategic objectives through effective stakeholder engagement;
- Play an active role in the High Commission’s crisis preparedness planning and contribute to the work of the Security Policy Committee;
- Support the planning and delivery of senior-level inward and outward visits, including Ministerial and senior official programmes, stakeholder engagement and logistics;
- Work collaboratively across the High Commission to develop and deliver projects that advance FCDO priorities and Country Business Plan objectives;
- Provide organisational and administrative support to colleagues in Nicosia, across the region and in London to ensure effective policy delivery.

Our ideal candidate shows:
- Full professional proficiency in English and Greek, written and spoken (minimum C1 for CEFR framework*);
- At least 2 to 3 years’ experience working in an organisation with a level of international work;
- Strong collaboration and partnering skills, effective team player, and ability to build relationships and networks across diverse stakeholders;
- Excellent judgment and analysis. Able to identify key sources of information on new areas of focus and provide timely policy advice on complex issues;
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, delivering clear messages, building rapport, and handling difficult conversations;
- Confidence and experience in international engagement, balancing cultural awareness with defending UK interests;
- Resilience to maintain personal and team motivation while working on challenging policy issues with during crisis response;
- Willingness to develop a positive team spirit where colleagues feel valued and respected.

Nice to have:
- An in-depth understanding of issues around justice, home affairs, serious organised crime, terrorism, cyber, or other national security threats;
- University degree in relevant subjects such as criminal law, international security, defence studies, etc;
- Policies, mechanisms and structures in place across the RoC for protecting national security and maintaining law and order;
- Experience of working in or with. law enforcement, military or security sectors;
- Understanding of or experience working in multilateral bodies involved in tackling security threats (eg NATO, Europol, OSCE etc).

This is a permanent contract of 37.5 working hours per week.
The confirmation of appointment is subject to professional background checks and security clearance procedures, as well as the successful completion of a 6 months probation period.
The successful candidate must be free of any convictions and undergo a UK security clearance process.

Staff recruited locally by the British High Commission in Nicosia are subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Republic of Cyprus employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: All applicants should have the right to live and work in Cyprus and be prepared to engage bi-communally, where necessary. The British High Commission does not sponsor work/ residency permits.
Learning and Development: You will have opportunities to influence funding streams including programme work and public diplomacy initiatives and will be expected to complete all mandatory FCDO training and will have the opportunity to undertake relevant Civil Service Learning courses for this role and their future career development. There will be opportunities to attend courses and events in Cyprus and overseas.
