The British Embassy in Lisbon is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic, security and consular interests overseas. We are now seeking a proactive intern to support the Corporate Services team in delivering its Net Zero objectives. The role will focus on supporting sustainability initiatives, improving and automating environmental data collection, and maintaining reporting on the Beyond platform.

A particular emphasis will be placed on supporting the new Residence, helping to ensure it operates as sustainably as possible. The internship offers practical experience in a diplomatic environment while contributing directly to the Embassy’s carbon reduction and sustainability goals. This internship will also provide exposure to Estates/Facilities Management, assisting the team in meeting its objectives, producing high quality work, and maintaining strong stakeholder satisfaction.
As an intern, you’ll get involved in tasks such as:
- Support delivery of the Embassy’s Net Zero and sustainability objectives.
- Collect, validate and help automate sustainability data for the Embassy, Vice Consulate and residential estate, particularly the new Residence.
- Upload and maintain data on the Beyond reporting platform.
- Support monitoring and basic analysis of energy use and emissions.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders and provide support for sustainability related meetings and activities.
- Support the Estates Team in administrative work and liaising with suppliers.

- fluency in both English and Portuguese at a minimum of a C1 level according to the CEFR framework*.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word and Power Point).
- Recently completed or currently completed a degree.
- An enthusiastic, flexible, committed self-starter, with a high-level of motivation and willingness to learn.
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as on own initiative when required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

This is a full-time, 6-month internship contract (35 hours net per week) with possibility of extension. The successful candidate will be able to work remotely up to two days each week.
The British Embassy in Lisbon aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role of €920 gross monthly allowance plus a monthly meal allowance of €193.60.
All staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Portugal are subject to local Portuguese employment law as well as internal regulations in force at any given time.
The successful candidate will be subject to a professional background and security clearance and must have pre-existing work authorisation for Portugal in order to apply.
