The British Embassy in The Hague is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas, and is recruiting Public Policy & Diplomacy interns.
The main purpose of the internship will be to support the Policy team, Events team, and teams supporting senior leaders with various public diplomacy activities, including communications work. The successful candidate(s) will support a broad range of events that cover the breadth of the embassy’s work. The successful candidates will have a unique opportunity to learn about public policy and diplomacy in action and gain direct exposure to the workings of a busy bilateral embassy. Within the Public Policy & Diplomacy internship there are three internship tracks.
Science and Technology track – Supporting the Embassy’s work in Science and Technology, this internship focuses on strengthening research and innovation ties between the UK and the Netherlands. Areas of collaboration include emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum computing. An existing interest or knowledge in these fields is a strong advantage, along with a willingness to learn more about cutting-edge developments in science and tech.
Events track – Supporting the design and delivery of all aspects of diplomatic events. This role works closely with the Ambassador’s team, as well as the policy and events teams. The intern will be involved in every stage of event planning—from initial concept to final delivery. Key responsibilities include liaising directly with suppliers and sponsors, managing guest lists and invitations, tracking event budgets, and ensuring all logistics are in place. The successful candidate should demonstrate strong project management skills, excellent organisation, and the ability to multitask effectively.
Public Affairs track – Supporting the Public Affairs and Communications team with press monitoring, media engagement, public diplomacy campaigns, and communications planning. This includes contributing to the development of content for various events, drafting written materials, and assisting in the creation of strategic communications plans. This intern will also play a role in evaluating previous communications activity.
There is overlap between the three tracks and interns from all tracks will be expected to work together on projects, or across teams based on the work of the embassy at the time. All interns will also support work across wider bilateral teams, based on the work of the embassy.
Roles and responsibilities:
An indication of the average proportion of tasks, noting that this varies based on the embassy’s priorities, and will change over the course of the internship. The role exists as part of a team and all staff are expected to be flexible in supporting colleagues, particularly at busy times.
For the Events track:
• 35% – Event preparation: Manage the full invitation process for events, from initial planning to distribution and tracking RSVPs. Collaborate with event planning committees and lead officers, handling enquiries from both internal Embassy teams and external contacts. Support event planning by scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, taking meeting notes, maintaining accurate records and documentation, and keeping all stakeholders informed throughout the process.
• 20% – Event design: Help design embassy events, including catering, entertainment, and contingency arrangements such as wet weather preparation. Take the lead on procuring goods and services needed for each event. Collaborate with lead officers and the residence team to ensure all logistical requirements are understood and addressed. Work with Corporate Services to monitor event budgets, and coordinate with the Department for Business and Trade to secure sponsorship where needed.
• 20% – Wider support to teams, including on stakeholder engagement and diary management.
• 15% – Post-event support: After the event, ensure that the project is formally closed, invoices are account for, and (if necessary) produce a detailed report of the event, including recommendations for future events, including feedback from all stakeholders.
• 10% – Press and media reporting – supporting in the creation of daily media summaries as part of a rota across the wider teams.
For the Public Affairs track:
• 30% – Press monitoring and reporting. Keep track of relevant news stories in Dutch newspapers and provide reports on a regular basis. Contribute to daily media reporting as well as wider thematic reporting on key policy areas of interest.
• 25% – Support the Policy team with monitoring and reporting of domestic policy matters and parliamentary debates. For example, follow and report on debates, summarising Kamerbrieven (letters to Parliament).
• 15% – Support the communications team with the conception and development of campaigns across multiple platforms and formats (e.g. in person, digital).
• 5% – Evaluating campaigns and activities, helping to assess performance and improve future activities.
• 10% – Event preparation and logistics, supporting teams in the preparation of events and providing logistical support to these events.
• 15% – Supporting wider public affairs engagement and activities, based on the needs of the team at the time.
For the Science and Technology track:
• 35% – Policy reporting and monitoring, helping to track relevant announcements from a range of government bodies and other institutions and organisations
• 20% – Support the science and technology team with the conception and development of campaigns and events, ensuring there is a clear forward look of future engagement
• 20% – Event support and facilitation, supporting events as they happen
• 5% – Evaluating campaigns and activities, helping to assess performance and improve future activities.
• 10% – Press and media reporting – supporting in the creation of daily media summaries as part of a rota across the wider policy team.
• 10% – Supporting wider public affairs engagement and activities, based on the needs of the team at the time.

Internships
The successful candidate will be offered a 6 months fixed-term internship contract and will receive a flat compensation amount of €400 per month based on working 20 hours per week. The duration of the internship allows for some flexibility to take into account specific demands which may be set by Dutch higher education institutions.
