Join the UK’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and help drive investment and trade across Europe. In this exciting role, you will influence how European businesses and governments engage with the UK—supporting growth, exports, and long-term partnerships. Based at the British Embassy in Madrid, you will work as part of a collaborative virtual Europe hub, partnering with colleagues across the region and in London to deliver high-impact communications and marketing activity.
Main purpose of job:
Communications & Content
- Develop and deliver clear, engaging external communications aligned with DBT priorities.
- Draft and publish high-quality content, including briefings, articles, social media and presentations.
- Ensure a consistent UK Government tone of voice and brand across Europe.
Marketing & Campaigns
- Support and deliver Europe-wide marketing and communications campaigns.
- Promote trade events, missions, visits and key announcements in collaboration with country teams.
- Monitor performance and contribute to evaluating campaign impact.
Stakeholder & Network Engagement
- Act as a communications point of contact across the DBT Europe and FCDO network.
- Coordinate effectively with Posts, the Europe Core Office and London teams.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Digital & Channels Management
- Manage and update digital platforms, including websites and social media channels.
- Use data and insights to improve engagement and campaign effectiveness.
- Bring creativity and innovation to digital communications delivery.
Corporate & Business Support
- Support planning, reporting and continuous improvement of communications activity.
- Provide organisational support for meetings, projects and events.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:
- Full professional proficiency in English (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
- At least 3 years of demonstrable experience in communications, marketing or a related field;
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, working independently in a remote or virtual team environment;
- At least 2 to 3 years’ experience creating content for digital and social media channels, with a good understanding of what works for different audiences;
- 2 to 3 years’ experience in proactive media engagement;
- Ability to identify and sale compelling stories;
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships across different cultures and time zones;
- A proactive, creative approach to problem-solving and generating ideas;
- Good analytical skills, including the ability to evaluate communications activity and use data to inform decisions.

Nice to have:
- Experience working in a B2B, trade, investment or business environment;
- Knowledge of the Spanish and/or another European business and media landscape and experience of generating earned media;
- Experience working in or with a government communications team;
- Familiarity with GCS (Government Communication Service) frameworks and standards, such as OASIS campaign planning;

This is a full-time, permanent contract at (EO-EE) grade level, based in Madrid.
The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.
The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
Working patterns: Normal working hours are 37.5 per week: 8.00am to 16:00pm from Monday to Friday.
This role is based in Madrid and will involve occasional travel in Europe. The successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly as part of a virtual team, including liaising regularly with colleagues in different time zones. The role is subject to UK security vetting requirements.
Learning & Development: We offer time and financial support for the successful candidate to take advantage of professional learning and development opportunities inside and outside of the organisation. All new hires undertake a workplace induction and there are a number of mandatory e-learning courses that must be completed in order to pass probation.
