Who are we?
The British Embassy Vienna is part of a network, representing British political interests overseas. We are currently looking for a Residence Housekeeping and Service Assistant to work within the team at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Vienna. We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Residence Housekeeper & Hospitality Assistant to ensure the Ambassador’s Residence is maintained to an exceptional standard. This role combines high-quality housekeeping with supporting official hospitality events, requiring discretion, flexibility, and a service-focused approach.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Housekeeping
- Deliver consistent, high-standard cleaning of the Residence (including vacuuming, mopping, dusting, laundry and ironing)
- Maintain a presentable, welcoming environment for the Ambassador, family, and guests
- Identify and proactively address cleaning and maintenance needs
Hospitality & Events
- Prepare and serve refreshments (tea, coffee, light breakfasts)
- Support official events, including lunches and dinners, as required
- Assist with basic food preparation for business hospitality
- Occasionally support events held at the British Embassy Residence
Operations & Administration
- Maintain regular communication with the Line Manager
- Manage stock levels for cleaning and kitchen supplies and place orders as required
- Use the corporate credit card in line with policy and reconcile expenses digitally
- Keep accurate records using internal systems
Facilities & Coordination
- Liaise with the Embassy Facilities Team to report faults and arrange repairs
- Act as on-site contact for maintenance technicians and external providers (e.g. caterers)
- Proactively identify and follow up on maintenance or upgrade needs

- Proven experience in professional housekeeping or hospitality
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high standards
- A flexible approach, including availability for occasional evenings and weekends
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
- Discretion and professionalism in a private residence environment
Additional information:
Working hours may vary in line with Residence operational needs, including occasional out-of-hours support. The role requires regular on-site presence at the Residence

Our ideal candidate shows:
- Good operational level of spoken and written English (at least B2 level according to the CEFR Framework*)
- Minimum 2 years of working experience in Housekeeping
- Minimum 2 years of working experience in hospitality, serving high level guests in a hotel, restaurant or private residence setting; 5* star standard desirable.
- Ability to work well independently
- Strong attention to detail and high standard of service
- Ability to exercise discretion
- Ability to work flexibly in respect of working hours and duties, taking on new tasks where required
- Ability to undertake other manual tasks where required

This is a country based staff position at the British Embassy in Vienna; it is not a diplomatic designated position. The position is subject to the terms and conditions of British Embassy employees.
This is a full-time (40 hours per week) permanent contract.
Working pattern: 8 hours per day. (overtime over 8 hours per day is paid out). Monday – Friday with start/end times between 08:30-18:00. 1 hour unpaid lunch break – flexibility can be given and flexibility is required for events.
You will be expected to demonstrate flexibility in your hours and tasks undertaken. There is paid overtime for hours worked beyond the regular hours which must be agreed in advance of overtime occurring.
Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked. The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys 14 Austrian / UK public holidays per year and we are committed to ensuring a work / life balance. Flexible working is supported, within operational constraints and in line with the flexible working policy.
The cost of the Vienna yearly transport ticket is reimbursed (prorated for months in the role),
•Salary is for 40 hours per week, payable 15 x per year as follows:
•€ 2,535.10 Gross (including € 298.10 paid out in place of lodgings and snacks, dinner, lunch, breakfast) paid 12 x per year;
•and € 2.237 Gross, paid 3 x per year.
•In addition, € 365,- is paid out once a year to cover the Wiener Linien yearly transport ticket (pro-rated for employment start date)
•There is a one-week probation period for this role.
•This is a live-out position and board/lodgings elements are therefore reflected in the salary.
You will receive your salary minus social insurance deductions and are expected to comply with Austrian tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Austrian authorities. However, in some cases you will receive an abated salary where dual taxation agreements apply. Further information will be given at the recruitment stage.
The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they are legally able to work in Austria. The Embassy is not able to assist with any visa or sponsorship arrangements.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Austrian employment law.
Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Austria and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country.
