Who are we?
The British Embassy Vienna is part of a network, representing British political interests overseas. We are currently looking for a skilled and confident Residence Service & Housekeeping Assistant to work within the team at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Vienna.
Main purpose of the role:
The job holder will undertake a broad range of duties within a high functioning team, to support the effective running of all Residence activities.
There will be additional duties as required during evenings and weekends, such as greeting overnight guests and providing service in accordance with the needs of Residence operations.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Housekeeping: Provide routine and high-quality cleaning of the Residence. Support with washing and ironing table linen and a willingness to help where it is needed e.g. assisting in the kitchen with food preparation when required and covering for colleagues on leave. Maintain and order the cleaning materials.
Guests: The jobholder should be attentive and cater to the needs of the Ambassador, their family, and all guests at the Residence, whether this be for an event or overnight guests; receiving guests, greeting VIP guests with special attention, assisting with luggage, providing service of refreshments and breakfast etc., also catering to ad-hoc requests e.g. shirt pressing.
Events: All aspects of food & beverage service delivery to a consistently high (5*) standard, under the supervision of the Residence Manager and Chef. From table setting to providing kitchen-to-table oversight, including close attention to dietary requirements.
Understand and help deliver the full preparation of events, overseeing event set-ups, silver polishing, table decorations, and delivering service at a full range of events (breakfasts, lunches, afternoon teas, dinners, and evening receptions).
General: Liaise and communicate effectively with the Residence team, the Ambassador, and their family, so that together we showcase British excellence whilst delivering a confident and quality service to the Ambassador and her guests.
Support the team with house management activities in line with security regulations, like locking doors, supervising maintenance and cleaning services of external providers, and assisting with stock registry and inventories.

- Experience in a hospitality environment.
- Strong hospitality skills and previous experience of hospitality service in a hotel, restaurant or private residence setting; 5* star standard desirable.
- Skilled and confident in service of events and knowledgeable on serving wines and all other beverages.
- Ability to demonstrate consistently high standards of service, with strong attention to detail.
- Strong verbal communication skills and excellent customer focus.
- Good operational level of spoken English (B2 level accordingly to CEFR*)

This is a country based staff position at the British Embassy in Vienna; it is not a diplomatic designated position. The position is subject to the terms and conditions of British Embassy employees.
This is a full-time (40hours per week) fixed-term contract until 31 July 2027 covering a period of maternity leave of the jobholder.
Standard work hours are 8 hours per day and unpaid breaks must be taken during the working day. The nature of the work within this busy Residence means that you will be expected to demonstrate flexibility in your hours and timetable of work. This will include evening and shift working, variable hours, and on rare occasions weekend and bank holiday working. There is paid overtime for hours worked beyond the regular hours a day, and time off in lieu (TOIL) can be granted at the discretion of the Residence Manager.
The annual leave entitlement is 25 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys 14 Austrian / UK public holidays per year and we are committed to ensuring a work / life balance. Flexible working is supported, within operational constraints and in line with the flexible working policy.
We offer:
- Salary is for 40 hours per week, payable 15 x per year as follows:
- € 2.437 Gross (including € 200 paid out in place of lodging and board) paid 12 x per year;
- and € 2.237 Gross, paid 3 x per year.
- A morning snack, lunch and afternoon snack are provided.
- In addition, € 365,- is paid out once a year to cover the Wiener Linien yearly transport ticket (pro-rated for employment start and end date).
- There is a one-week probation period for this role.
- Uniform is provided.
You will receive your salary minus social insurance deductions and are expected to comply with Austrian tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Austrian authorities. However, in some cases you will receive an abated salary where dual taxation agreements apply. Further information will be given at the recruitment stage.
The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they are legally able to work in Austria. The Embassy is not able to assist with any visa or sponsorship arrangements.
Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Austrian employment law.
Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Austria and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure you meet the legal requirements to live and work in this country.
