Who are we?
The United Kingdom’s Joint Delegation to NATO (UKDel NATO) is the vital link between the UK Government and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Its principal roles are to promote British interests in NATO and to keep UK Ministers and Government Departments informed about NATO discussions.
The Communications Team tells the story of UK leadership in the world’s strongest alliance, translating complex policy into engaging content for traditional and social media. The team works with the press, think tanks, colleagues in the UK and across NATO to communicate the UK’s policy objectives to different audiences.
The team is ambitious, agile and supportive, and values different perspectives. UKDel NATO has some of the FCDO’s best-performing social media accounts and continues to innovate to boost reach and deepen partnerships. The team works with prominent security and defence correspondents and leading think tanks to shape debate. We ensure the UK is an influential voice in NATO’s strategic communications, as the information environment transforms and the Alliance tackles information threats from our adversaries.
We are now looking for a Strategic Communications and Digital Assistant to join the Communications Team in Brussels.
Main purpose of the Role
This role sits at the heart of a small and high-impact Communications Team, managed by the Spokesperson. You will help enable the team’s success by managing our resources and working across portfolios, including supporting the Head of Digital on social media output and supporting the Spokesperson on engagement with press and think tanks.
You will provide media monitoring and help shape lines to take for the whole delegation, often liaising with Whitehall and the NATO system to align messaging. You will also support media operations at high-profile events such as NATO Ministerials, giving you behind-the-scenes access to meetings that make history.
The role offers considerable exposure to senior figures and Ministers, including briefing the Ambassador and other members of the Senior Leadership Team. You will need to digest complex information quickly, deliver high-quality work in a joint civilian-military environment, and build a network of contacts across NATO’s International Staff and Allied delegations. You will represent the UK in NATO committees and may also have opportunities to do so at international conferences. You will make a strong contribution to the team and wider UKDel NATO culture and you will take a proactive approach to your own development.
Roles and Responsibilities
The jobholder will be expected to:
- Create digital content: Create high-quality and engaging audiovisual content for Instagram, LinkedIn and X. Edit digital content, making use of relevant editing tools and software. Collate and analyse performance metrics and suggest creative options to improve online impact. Translate UK and NATO announcements into engaging content, with quality control and strategic direction from the Head of Digital. Manage UKDel NATO’s GOV.UK page and ensure it is kept up to date.
- Support the Communications team: Help the team succeed by tracking policy developments, committee meetings and announcements. Manage the team budget, think tank programme budget, forward look, leave calendar, rotas and shared area. Transfer documents between NATO and UK IT systems when requested by the team and as part of a delegation-wide rota.
- Media monitoring and messaging advice: Use a variety of tools, including AI, to produce daily media monitoring as part of a team rota, including ad hoc flash reports when required. Follow reporting trends and advise the Senior Leadership Team on media engagements and messaging, with oversight from the Spokesperson.
- Support strategic communications planning and delivery: Create integrated communications campaigns to deliver UK objectives, with guidance from the Head of Digital and the Spokesperson. Support the smooth running of Ministerials, events and public diplomacy visits, working closely across the delegation and with the Senior Leadership Team and their Private Offices.
- Represent the UK in NATO committees when required: Understand the UK and NATO’s approaches to strategic communications and countering information threats. Represent the UK, when required, in NATO’s Strategic Communications Committee. Build a network of contacts in other Allied delegations and in NATO’s International Staff to inform and influence the UK’s position. Track committee documents and ensure they are circulated within the delegation and to teams across Whitehall.
- Participate in wider UKDel NATO initiatives as required.
