Main purpose of job: This is a rewarding but demanding role in a busy consular team, requiring strong resilience, sound judgement and the ability to manage sensitive casework, including a significant volume of arrest and detention cases. The British Assistance and Services Section (BASS) at the British Office Taipei is part of a global network making a direct difference to the lives of British people, often in difficult and challenging circumstances. The purpose of the role is to provide professional assistance and services to British people in Taiwan in their moment of need, as well as build partnerships with the British community, Taiwanese authorities, detention facilities, hospitals and other key stakeholders. The jobholder will report to the Head of the British Assistance and Services Section based in Taipei. The team is supervised by the Consular Regional Operations Manager (CROM) based in the region. Consular work can be emotionally challenging, distressing, and sensitive . Resources and support are available to help staff manage stress, but the successful candidate will need to demonstrate high levels of personal resilience, sound judgement, discretion and professionalism. The successful candidate must also maintain confidentiality and impartiality, and work in line with the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) Consular and Crisis Strategy, Consular Charter, consular guidance, business targets and local procedures.

Working Patterns: Monday – Friday 09:00 – 17:00 Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. Staff recruited locally by the British Office are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Taiwan employment law. Candidates must have the correct permit to work in Taiwan in order to apply. No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. You must have or be able to obtain correct permit to work or work authorisation in Taiwan in order to apply. Any costs related to obtaining or renewing permits and visas are the responsibility of the successful applicant. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount. The FCDO also operates an agile workforce.
