Who we are
The British Embassy in Paris is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The UK and France maintain a close bilateral relationship, supported by regular face‑to‑face engagement at senior level.
We are now looking for a Visits & Protocol Officer who will play an important role in supporting this work, by helping ensure that Royal, Ministerial and senior‑level visits to France are planned and delivered effectively.
You will join the Embassy’s Visits & Protocol Team, which is responsible for coordinating a wide range of high‑profile engagements. In 2025 alone, the team supported 74 visits, including visits by HRH The Prince of Wales, HRH The Princess Royal and several Prime Ministerial delegations.
What you will be doing?
This is a varied, fast‑paced and hands‑on role. You will regularly work in both French and English, coordinating with UK and French counterparts and responding to changing circumstances to ensure visits are delivered smoothly and professionally. Some work will take place outside normal office hours, including occasional short‑notice activity linked to visit schedules.
Outside of major visits, you will manage your workload proactively, building and maintaining contacts across Embassies, Ministries, police forces, venues and transport providers. You will provide advice on protocol matters, support the Embassy’s Honours work, and contribute flexibly to wider Embassy activity. This may include tasks like reporting on the coverage of the UK in French media, covering in the Ambassador’s office or supporting the delivery of public diplomacy events.
During Ministerial and Royal visits, you will:
- Act as an assigned logistical lead, serving as the main point of contact for UK teams and French counterparts;
- Draft diplomatic correspondence (including Notes Verbales) and negotiate support with French authorities;
- Work closely with Embassy teams, including Residence staff, security colleagues and diplomats, to prepare visit programmes;
- Update Embassy senior leaders, including the Ambassador, on visit arrangements;
- Represent the Embassy at reconnaissance visits and information meetings for upcoming events conducted in French;
- Create transport plans for visits and instruct Embassy drivers and external transport providers when leading on a visit;
- Liaise with airports, Eurostar and local authorities to facilitate arrivals and departures;
- Arrange reconnaissance visits for UK police protection officers, interpreting between French and English as required and developing a general understanding of close protection requirements.
Outside of specific visits, you will:
- Coordinate across the Embassy to brief the Ambassador on upcoming visits, advising on Embassy’s capacity to host;
- Provide discreet, professional support to the Embassy’s Honours Committee lead, coordinating nominations to recognise outstanding achievement by colleagues and partners for Honours awarded on behalf of His Majesty the King;
- Advise British and French contacts on protocol matters, including drafting of diplomatic correspondence, forms of address and the relevant importance of different Ministers in both systems;
- Support budget processes, including recharging visiting departments for costs incurred by the Embassy;
- Contribute flexibly to the work of the team and the wider Embassy, including drafting social media content, monitoring French media and supporting public diplomacy events.
The responsibilities of this role may evolve over time in line with changing Embassy requirements and the professional development aims of the jobholder. Flexibility and collaboration are expected across the Embassy to ensure continued delivery of UK Government priorities.
Why apply?
This is not a quiet office role. You will deal with senior stakeholders, complex logistics and fast‑moving situations. We would build your skills so that if the Prime Minister suddenly agrees to a meeting in Paris, you could be No10’s logistical point of contact, greeting the delegation at the airport alongside the Ambassador and maximising the efficiency of the PM’s time in France. The role offers exposure to a wide range of Embassy teams and stakeholders, as well as opportunities to broaden your understanding of the work of the British Government.
The role is offered on a four‑day‑per‑week basis, with a principle of mutual flexibility. While most work is planned in advance, some visits require presence on specific days or at short notice. During quieter periods, there is greater autonomy to structure your week, including some opportunity to work from home. Any hours worked beyond your contract are compensated with time off in lieu.
