Lab Manager

The Human Technopole Foundation is looking for a Lab Manager for the Centre of Structural Biology.

The role, reporting to the Head of the Centre – Prof. Alessandro Vannini -, will be responsible for managing laboratory operations in the Centre for Structural Biology.

Main responsibilities:

  • Manage orders for consumables, labware and small instrumentation so as to ensure the relevant and timely supply, including: i) planning of purchases on the basis of researcher’s needs and projects, and in close cooperation with the Procurement Office; ii) performing market analysis and provide researchers with cost effectiveness assessments of equipment and reagents; iii) contacting suppliers; iv) tracking orders, arranging deliveries, making and distributing stocks, managing inventories;
  • Manage instruments, covering the full pipeline of implementation: set-up, maintenance, periodic revisions and updates, safety documentation, performance monitoring and booking systems, including assisting the Head of Research and Group Leaders in the search for and selection of new laboratory equipment;
  • Maintain laboratory documentation across all workflows of the Centre, including experimental protocols, safety records, laboratory instrument manuals, and general laboratory documentations;
  • Manage sample workflows, assisting in the procedures for collection, processing, storage, and data archival of selected types of biological samples, including managing their mobilization across labs, facilities and research Centres, also outside of Human Technopole;
  • Train scientists of the Centre on the correct use of laboratory equipment and the electronic lab book, safety instructions & regulations, common laboratory procedures;
  • Integrate laboratory management within the electronic lab-book ecosystem;

Job requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in lab management, preferably in structural biology-related areas;
  • First-hand knowledge and experience in molecular biology and biochemistry workflows, including a track record in roles such as Research Assistant, Laboratory technician or Laboratory manager;
  • Excellent organizational skills and willingness to engage deeply with the scientific themes of the Centre, so as to tailor laboratory management to specific priorities and anticipate future needs across the full range of lab operations;
  • Communication skills across a wide range of interactions (scientists, suppliers, administrators and external collaborations);
  • Relevant experience in sample handling workflows, including collection, storage and data archival, including the fluent use of databases and lab management computational resources;
  • Fluency in English – HT is an international research institute;
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and to work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to lead and gain the assistance and cooperation of others in a team endeavour;
  • Ability to build trust through operating with transparency and creating an open and positive environment.
