Summary of position:
The Consulate General of Canada in New York and Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations is seeking to hire a Maintenance Attendant to work with our Events and Visits Team.

Under the general supervision of the Common Services Section Head, the Maintenance Attendant will undertake hospitality & culinary duties such as role of server during official events, coordination with contracted servers, setup and cleaning duties before and after official events, ensuring cleanliness of hospitality materiel, and preparation of light snacks and coffee service ensuring proper food management handling, cleaning duties such as cleaning and sanitizing public areas, pantries, working areas and equipment so they are maintained in a clean and orderly condition and occasional large scale cleaning projects, setup duties such as lifting and movement of tables and chairs, administrative duties such as ensuring the delivery and inventory of supplies and event materiel, material & supplies responsibilities (making purchase and reconciliation of expenditures), and other duties such as overseeing or escorting contractors and collaborating with the security team.

 

Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education
Successful completion of secondary school or GED.

Language
Fluency in English (oral and written)

Experience
1. Significant recent* work experience in setup and cleaning duties before and after events (e.g. meetings, conferences, lunches, etc.) in an office, restaurant, hospitality/ catering environment.
2. Experience providing event or meeting support.
3. Experience purchasing, supplies and cleaning materials.
4. Experience providing administrative support tasks, such as inventory, ordering of supplies;
5. Significant recent* experience using MS Office Suite, e.g. Word, Excel and Outlook.

* Significant recent work experience is defined as a minimum of 3 years in the last 5 years.

Rated Requirements

The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Knowledge
– Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety practices, safety regulations regarding the use and disposal of chemical substances, protective gear, safety signs.
– Knowledge in supporting audio/visual equipment, such as microphones and presentations.

Operational Requirements:
Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with the Locally Engaged Staff (LES) regulations of 40 hours per week and may need to operate on a shift schedule between the hours of 08h00 and 20h00, Monday to Friday.

The successful candidate must be able to work frequent paid overtime on short notice and be available for duties outside of normal working hours, i.e., early morning, evenings, weekends, and some overnight travel.

 

Condition(s) of Employment:
– Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal and credit background check;
– Independent work authorization in the United States and status in accordance with United States protocol directives for foreign missions. In this respect, applicants must confirm independent work authorization in the United States (e.g. US Citizen, U.S Legal Permanent Resident (LPR), or specific visa categories (e.g. dependents of Diplomatic and Official Visas holders)) as required by the Department of State for employment in a foreign mission;
– Good physical condition since the position requires standing for extended periods of time, bending, kneeling and capable of lifting 20lbs (9.5kg).
