Job Purpose and Organizational Context

The Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA) is responsible for positioning UNDP as the world’s leading global development network, promoting its global authority and thought leadership on sustainable development and the interconnected issues of poverty, inequality, and climate change. BERA leads and supports UNDP in building and nurturing strategic relationships and alliances essential to achieving its mission. Creating strong political and financial backing for UNDP by providing partners and supporters with a clear understanding of what UNDP does and how our mission, capabilities and flagship services relate to them. The Bureau leads UNDP’s work on innovative and diversified partnerships and ways of financing the Decade of Action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. It is also responsible for global campaigns on critical development issues, which aim to inform government policies and build partnerships around high-impact solutions. BERA coordinates and sets corporate standards across the functions of partnerships, marketing and communications within UNDP and leads on internal communications.

The Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy is positioned around three service lines; Public Partnership; Advocacy, Marketing and Communications; and Private and Finance Partners, all working in close collaboration and coordination under the guidance of the Directorate and with the support of the Management Support Unit and Strategic Analysis and Engagement team.

BERA has a robust network of Representation Offices (Brussels, Copenhagen, Geneva, Tokyo and Washington D.C.) and Regional Teams in five hubs (Africa, Arab States, Asia Pacific, Europe and CIS, and Latin American and the Caribbean) co-led with Regional Bureaux, all of which play a critical role in audience centric communications and management and strengthening of relationships with Public and Private Partners to help build a strong brand for UNDP within the local ecosystem.

The position of Media Analyst is within the Advocacy, Marketing and Communications Group in BERA, reporting to the Head of Media. The Media Analyst supports the development and implementation of corporate communications strategies and plans around key corporate priority events and products. Under the guidance of the Media Relations Lead, he/she/they supports all UNDP’s media relations at an international level, including developing messaging and Q&As, arranging media interviews with spokespeople and experts, organizing media events, pitching articles for publication, and other outreach as necessary. He/she/they helps to identify key media opportunities and identify human interest stories of UNDP’s program work to develop with a view to securing coverage in international media outlets. He/she/they provides support to UNDP’s Goodwill Ambassador program, as well as being responsible for monitoring and analysis of UNDP’s media impact.

Duties and Responsibilities

1) Contribute to the implementation of the External Engagement Strategy

Initiate, draft and edit communications materials, including press kits, fact sheets and infographics.

Participate in organizing media events and positioning UNDP senior staff in media outlets.

Work closely with policy teams and communications colleagues across the organisation to identify media moments and implement relevant activities.

Generate content aimed at external audiences focused on UNDP’s global programmatic and policy priorities.

2) Support to media relations

Develop and maintain relationships with media outlets and journalists, particularly in relation to UNDP’s priority themes.

Pitch UNDP stories and spokespeople to priority media outlets.

Identify and develop new opportunities for positive media coverage of UNDP’s mission and mandate.

Maintain database of media interactions, including interviews, stories published, and media mentions.

Build new and update existing targeted media lists using media contacts service provider.

3) Support the Goodwill Ambassador and Celebrity Relations program

Support the day-to-day activities of the celebrity and influencer relations division, including drafting web, social media and other comms content; updating the Goodwill Ambassador web page; and tracking and compiling reports on celebrity engagement.

Support the expansion of the Goodwill Ambassador program by assisting with research, due diligence and appointment processes.

Support media outreach efforts around celebrity supporters, including drafting press materials, posting celebrity-related press releases in the UNDP online newsroom, building media lists, pitching, and creating reach and impact reports.

4) Media monitoring and dissemination of communication materials

Responsible for posting press releases and other relevant communication materials on UNDP global website.

Responsible for disseminating press releases, media advisories and other relevant communication materials to external media.

Responsible for media monitoring of UNDP mentions and identifying important/relevant media articles.

Create and maintain database of sensitive issues.

Responsible for compiling media coverage reports on UNDP priority issues, key events, signature publications, campaigns and end-of-year media and communications reach and impact.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
Advanced degree in relevant field of communications, journalism, social science, or related field.

First degree acceptable with an additional two years of experience in relevant field of communications and/or journalism.

Experience:
A minimum of two (2) years with Master’s degree and four (4) years if First degree, of relevant professional work experience required in the field of communications and/or journalism.

Experience in media relations.

Track record of successfully pitching media interviews and stories to international media outlets.

Experience working for international/intra-governmental organizations.

Language Requirements:
Fluency in written and spoken English required.

Knowledge of additional UN language(s) an asset.
