What We Are Looking for
ISGlobal and the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona are looking for a candidate physician specializing in internal medicine or infectious diseases with expertise in clinical research. This position is ideal for a candidate looking for a joint position combining both clinical work and research in international health. The candidate must also be willing to travel.
The physician will be part of the clinical team working at the International Health Department in the Hospital Clinic and work nationally and internationally on the diagnosis and management of tropical diseases.
Furthermore, the candidate will engage and lead research activities in the field of international health, particularly in the area of Neglected Tropical Diseases. Tasks will include supporting the growing international health department through developing strategic research questions, applying for and procuring grants, designing and implementing research protocols, summarizing findings and publishing results in research journals, and assuming general responsibility for scientific leadership.
The physician will be part of a dedicated team with current research initiatives in Chagas, STHs, febrile illnesses including malaria and others.
Main duties and tasks
- Attend patients in Hospital Clinic’s Travel Clinic, and when needed in health facilities located in countries in Sub Saharan Africa or Latin America.
- Participate in the collaborative design of strategic research questions in the field of Neglected Tropical Diseases, and engage in the design and development of clinical studies (epidemiologic and clinical trials) in the area of Neglected Tropical Diseases.
- Participate and occasionally lead the activities of research studies including ensuring all study procedures are of good quality and are carried out per good clinical practices, with an emphasis on the clinical management of patients under their supervision.
- Participate in the analysis and writing of scientific manuscripts.
- Participate in the application and procurement of grants.
- Supervise other personnel in the team to coordinate research efforts for increased efficiency; participate in the training of fellows, residents, students, and volunteer workers as needed.
Experience and training
Essential Requirements:
- Medical Doctor with specialization in internal medicine or infectious diseases.
- Demonstrated experience in the preparation and execution of research studies.
- Proven ability to manage teams and lead.
- Experience and knowledge on issues related to Global Health.
- Expertise in epidemiology, Neglected Tropical Diseases or related fields will be highly evaluated Additional profiles will be considered if highly motivated researchers in other related disciplines.
Desirable:
- PhD or keen interest in obtaining a PhD
- Previous experience conducting clinical trials according to ICH-GCP.
- Practical experience in health research in low-resources settings.
- Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
Languages and others
- Fluent in English
- Spanish proficiency.
- Availability to travel.
Salary and conditions
The position is for a period of 2 years. The conditions will be agreed according to training and experience. Incorporation planned by January 2022.
