The Opportunity:
A highly motivated candidate is invited to join the research group of Dr Chris Sibley as a post-doctoral researcher. The group principally studies molecular and cellular events underlying neurological disorders. In this position, funded by the Royal Society and Wellcome Trust, the post-holder will integrate functional genomics techniques with computational modelling to study disease relevant RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) that are of interest to the lab. Specifically, the 2-year post will involve application of RNA-sequencing and the labs enhanced iCLIP protocol to generate high resolution datasets that the post-holder will then use to comprehensively model RBP activity. This mixed wet/dry lab approach will allow the post-holder to gain important insight into how each profiled RBP recognises and acts on their functional targets, and importantly identify regulated RNA processing events that are implicated in disease aetiology. Follow up will be in human cellular systems using standard molecular biology approaches. There will be additional opportunity to assist with the further development of the enhanced iCLIP method, and to implement the complementary interactome capture workflow for the discovery of RBPs with changed activity under specific experimental paradigms. The position will establish a new arm of the group at the University’s Kings Buildings campus, and opportunities to supervise others will be forthcoming.
Your skills and attributes for success:
- A PhD (or near completion) in neuroscience, medical sciences, biochemistry, genetics or another closely related field.
- Experience working in the field of RNA biology using standard molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, cloning)
- Experience in a subset of the following techniques is strongly desirable: RNA sequencing, CLIP (or related functional genomics approaches), computational biology.
- An outstanding academic track record commensurate with the career stage and experience that includes peer-reviewed published work.
- Be active in developing the project, to collaborate as appropriate, and to contribute to an enthusiastic working atmosphere.
