A Postdoctoral Scientist position is available in Prof. Costas Anastassiou’s laboratory in the Departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology and the Regenerative Medicine Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. The successful applicant will join a highly dynamic research group with excellent track-record and rich resources in both basic and translational research on brain disorders (epilepsy and cancer).
The Anastassiou Lab studies how the cellular composition of neurons in the brain translates to their phenotype and how they combine in brain circuits to produce function or, in the case of disease, dysfunction. We have a broad background in multimodal cellular data analysis (electrophysiology, anatomy, transcriptomics) and the development of computational workflows (statistical learning, optimization, and simulation) to understand cellular activity. We collaborate with various teams and clinicians to improve diagnostics and advance brain therapies in diseases such as epilepsy and cancer.
Cedars-Sinai ranked #6 in the US and #2 in California in the U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals 2021-22” analysis!
The Postdoctoral Scientist will lead our effort to mechanistically understand the occurrence and development of brain diseases like epilepsy and cancer at the cellular and cell type level in the human brain. The core responsibility for this position is to setup experimental in vitro preparations and perform single-cell patch-clamp investigations. Uniquely, the brain tissue under investigation will originate either directly from neurosurgical procedures (e.g., cancer treatment or temporal lobectomy) or, indirectly, from patient-derived pluripotent stem cells. Multi-modal cell-based investigations using techniques such as patch-sequencing will be employed to look at cellular vulnerabilities to specific diseases (e.g. [Anastassiou et al. Nat Neurosci, 2011; Anastassiou et al. JNeurophysiol, 2015; Buchin et al. 2020]).
Ideal applicants are self-motivated individuals enthusiastic to interact with other lab members and the PI.
Requirements:
- Doctorate (PhD or MD) in experimental neuroscience, biology, biophysics, bioengineering or related field. Ph.D. and/or equivalent doctorate within previous four years.
- Strong background and proven track record in all aspects relevant to single-cell electrophysiology and patch-clamping are essential. Experience targeting and recording from diverse cell types using in vitro patch-clamping is preferred. Experience with sequencing technologies or patch-sequencing is preferred, but other strong applicants will also be considered.
