The Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) is a private diplomacy organisation founded on the
principles of humanity, impartiality and independence. Its mission is to help prevent, mitigate and
resolve armed conflict through dialogue and mediation. HD is currently looking for a:
Project Adviser, Syria, at 100%
Location: Flexible
Duration: 12 months (with the possibility of extension)
Starting date: as soon as possible
HD has been working in relation to the conflict in Syria since 2012. HD works with all parties to the conflict to de-escalate tensions, reduce the risks of conflict, and establish a conducive environment for peace negotiations.
The Project Adviser will support and advise the implementation of the Syria project.
The Project Adviser will have the following responsibilities:
• Support the implementation of HD’s projects in close collaboration with other members of HD’s
Syria team;
• Develop HD’s network with stakeholders relevant for conflict resolution in Syria to support the
implementation of HD’s projects;
• Represent HD in bilateral meetings with Syrian stakeholders and international actors;
• Travel to the Middle East and Europe to advance HD’s project objectives;
• Produce reports on HD’s activities with interlocutors and provide context analysis in a timely and
qualitative manner;
• Monitor the political and conflict situation in Syria and analyse their impact on the project.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should meet the following criteria:
• Relevant university degree and at least 5 years of experience in a similar function;
• Strong understanding of mediation processes;
• Political and cultural knowledge of the Middle East region;
• Strong political analysis skills;
• Excellent command of written and spoken English;
• Proficient in written Arabic and fluent in spoken Arabic;
• Command of Kurmanji an asset.
Personality: The successful candidate should be a team player, reliable, diligent, and have strong social as well as communication skills. S/he should be capable of multi-tasking and working on several projects simultaneously.
