Project Manager: UN Presence at Expo 2020

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Within the delegated authority and under relevant supervision, the UN Volunteer will:

1. Lead the overall management of the UN Pavilion at Expo 2020

* Manage the ongoing planning and running of the UN Pavilion, including problem solving and trouble shooting where needed.

* Coordinate with United Nations entities, including the United Nations Country Team in the UAE to manage the use of the UN Pavilion and maintain a schedule/programme calendar for the UN Pavilion.

* Manage, train and supervise the Expo support team assigned to manage the UN Pavilion, including interns provided by Expo and UN personnel (interns, United Nations Volunteers etc).

* Manage the calendar of events at the UN Pavilion during the course of Expo, and ensure their advertisement through social media and within Expo calendars and the Expo App

* Close out the UN Pavilion at the end of Expo ensuring return of any UN assets and materials

2. Coordinate with relevant partners on the schedule/programme calendar for the UN Pavilion

* Coordinate with Expo authorities to ensure smooth implementation of the schedule/programme calendar for the UN Pavilion.

* Coordinate with United Nations entities, including the United Nations Country Team in the UAE to ensure smooth implementation of the schedule/programme calendar for the UN Pavilion.

* Coordinate with the UN Secretariat’s Department of Global Communications in New York to ensure linkages and coherence between the use of the UN Pavilion and other UN engagements at Expo 2020.

3. Coordinate the implementation of the commemoration of United Nations Day (“Honour Day”) to be held on 24 October 2021

* Plan and coordinate a “Parade of Nations” by liaising with Expo officials and national pavilions.

* Liaise with the UN Secretariat’s Department of Global Communications in New York on the UN Day activities managed by their office, including a projection in Al-Wasl Dome.

4. Support the development of communications materials related to the use of the UN Pavilion

* Support the development of communications materials related to the use of the UN Pavilion over the course of Expo 2020.

* Manage inputs for social media dissemination of events and initiatives held at the UN Pavilion

* Produce a final report for public dissemination on all activities and initiatives held in the UN Pavilion

Perform any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor. Further, playing a significant leadership role, in support to more senior staff who might have other functions besides the domains of focus of the UNV.


Bachelor degree or equivalent


University Degree in communications, social sciences or a related field. Studies or experience in project management, event management, communications, or a related area


24 Months

  • At least two years of professional work experience in project management, event management, communications, or a related area.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Have affinity with or interest in the work of the United Nations, and volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development.
