Position Summary:

MSI is seeking an experienced Proposal Writer to join its Business Development Unit. This is an exciting new position that will work closely with the Deputy Director of Business Development to establish a centralized proposal writing function within the unit. This position will support a wide range of bids across MSI’s practice areas as a lead or support writer on major proposals. The successful candidate will work frequently with technical experts and proposal teams to develop compliant outlines, interview technical experts, and craft creative and persuasive approaches that meet the client’s needs. The position may be called upon to train and/or mentor other writers, perform color team or compliance reviews of bids, and travel internationally to support capture efforts. This position is full-time and located in our headquarters in Arlington, VA. MSI will also consider a remote opportunity for a strong and dedicated successful candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a core member of proposal teams as a lead or supporting writer. Support teams in creating compliant outlines and proposals that address the client’s needs.
  • Actively lead/participate in developing successful proposals and win strategy/theme development, including facilitating or participating in design sessions
  • Engage members of proposal teams to become familiar with the subject matter. Critically evaluate proposed solutions to identify weaknesses and suggest areas for improvement
  • Conduct desk research and interview/work with technical experts, including locals and home office and project staff, to gather up-to-date information on the context/operating environment, the client and innovative approaches to development. Travel to conduct reconnaissance for proposals as needed
  • Translate technical information and jargon into clear, easy-to-read text
  • Support the development of compelling graphics that explain complex messages clearly.

  • Revise drafts in response to feedback and comments in collaboration with the proposal team.

  • Harmonize or one-voice drafts written by multiple writers as needed

  • Write and edit proposals using MSI’s house style guide (based on AP Style).

  • Stay informed of client policies and initiatives and developments in MSI’s sectors, including democracy and governance, anti-corruption, rule of law, peace and stability, monitoring and evaluation, education, and leadership and organizational development

  • Support the development of tools and training materials for other writers. Conduct training and mentor other writers as needed

  • Review proposals during color teams or conduct compliance reviews of bids when required

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years of experience writing successful donor-funded proposals required, preferably for USAID. Experience writing successful bids for other donors, such as the World Bank, U.S. Department of State or Department of Defense, will be seriously considered.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline required.

  • Exceptional conceptual, analytical, writing and editing skills, including the ability to synthesize large amounts of information into concise, accurate and easy-to-read narratives

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, such as prioritizing tasks, adhering to tight deadlines, and handling multiple activities and proposals

  • Ability to travel as required on behalf of MSI.

  • Excellent oral and written communication to support proposal development and teamwork
  • Knowledge of AP style editing

  • Technical knowledge in one or more of MSI’s sectors is preferred, but not required. Sectors include democracy and governance, anti-corruption, rule of law, peace and stability, monitoring and evaluation, education, and leadership and organizational development

  • Fluency in English required.
