Epicentre is an organisation created by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in 1986. We conduct field epidemiology, training, and research activities for MSF interventions. Our activities for populations in precarious situations are led from Uganda, Niger, and France, and through the programs of MSF and others. They mainly concern infectious diseases and undernutrition.

The job purpose

You are looking for a meaningful professional experience?

Epicentre is looking for a Qualitative Researcher to the benefit of MSF France programs in Philippines. The main purpose of this position is to provide technical support to conduct an operational study (mixed-method) to assess the feasibility of the implementation of digital chest radiography and Computer-aided detection (CAD) for the diagnosis of TB in active case-finding.

Directly under Epicentre – Field Epidemiology and Training Department, you will report to the principal investigator and the study team. You will work closely with the medical team in the field, to ensure smooth integration and coordination of this operational research in programmatic activities.

Remote work from your home country, with visits to the field, you will be placed under the authority of MSF/EPICENTRE for administrative, logistics and security matters.

What you will bring

Skills to perform your main activities:

Technical skills: you will participate in the definition of the research question. You will develop the methodology and data collection tools related to the qualitative component of the study.

Your expertise to provide technical support to the study, will lead you to the implementation of the research protocol, ensuring all related team members follow it and respect the ethics.

You will conduct training and coaching of the field team in conducting in-depth individual interviews/focus group discussion of identified study participants.

You will liaise with and support the participating site with regards to data collection tools, actual data collection, and strategies of participants inclusion. You will perform qualitative data analysis and provide support to the field team for qualitative data collection. You will oversee data quality check (translation/transcription) and data management. You will collaborate in the integration and interpretation of qualitative and quantitative results if feasibility is assessed.

You will have the responsibility to prepare a report and collaborate to the redaction of an article for publication in a peer reviewed journal on the feasibility of using CAD TB.

Team management skills:

You will be requested to coordinate activities with different collaborators and partners, and to integrate into a multi-disciplinary, multi-national and highly motivated team.

In close coordination with the HR department and following the MSF vision, policies and values, you will be involved in the processes of refining job descriptions, participating to recruitment of study staff specifically involved in this part of the research, trainings, doing performance evaluations, contributing to the development of internal/external communication, for the epidemiological team members.

International context: you are willing and able to travel internationally. You have an excellent level of English (oral, written). As researcher specialized in qualitative methods, you might contribute to other team activities including training and international missions.

Educational & Experience: You have a master’s degree or similar high-level certification in public health, anthropology, sociology, psychology, or related field.

You have an excellent knowledge of qualitative analysis techniques and software use such as NVivo.

You have experience in qualitative research and qualitative data analysis.

Experience in the field of the new technologies or diagnosis and in medical research on developing countries would be an asset.

You are appreciated for your written and verbal communication skills in English, and French would be an asset.

You have proven ability to work in a dynamic and rigorous environment, to be flexible, to anticipate deadlines and to propose solutions.

Fixed-term contract of 6 months, with healthcare coverage. Flexible working periods according to the different steps of the study timeline (full time or part time possible).
