Research Assistant and Team Co-ordinator, Migration and Displacement Initiative (MDI)

The Opportunity

Save the Children International has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as the– Research Assistant and Team Co-ordinator, Migration and Displacement Initiative (MDI) position in London or  at any existing Save the Children International office location.

ROLE PURPOSE:

CONTEXT

Around 80 million people are currently displaced by conflict and violence, of which 34 million are children. These numbers are rapidly growing as climate change increasingly drives further migration and displacement (M&D). The impact of migration and forced displacement forms one of the pivotal political and humanitarian issues of our time – one that impacts upon millions of vulnerable children worldwide.

In response to the increasing impact of this crisis upon children, Save the Children (SC) established its Migration and Displacement Initiative (MDI) at the end of 2016. The MDI places children at the heart of global solutions to M&D, works to ensure that they reach more children through effective, durable, and scalable solutions, and that we are recognised as a global leader in child focused M&D programming.

As a compact, multidisciplinary team, the MDI exists as a catalyst unit specifically designed to drive forward knowledge, programming and innovation within Save the Children on child focused M&D to ensure that all migrant and displaced children survive, learn and are protected.

The MDI seeks to achieve this in three ways:

• As a Centre of Excellence and catalyst unit to drive knowledge, programming and policy work
• As an innovator in developing tools and solutions to improve the way we respond to displacement challenges
• As a convener to bring public, private and social sector partners together to tackle the issue collaboratively

The MDI is made up of 3 main pillars:

1. Programmes: working closely with SC colleagues and peer organisations to improve long-term outcomes for M&D children
2. Research: undertaking exploratory research on emerging issues facing migrating and displaced children, and assisting other Save the Children teams on the design of M&D research
3. Innovation: creating and collaborating on displacement tools, research and solutions

ROLE PURPOSE:

The role has two key components:

1. Research Assistant

As a key member of the MDI team, the Research Co-ordinator will play a supporting role in developing and driving forward our M&D related research work, contributing to building Save the Children’s M&D profile with key donors and influencers and enabling us to amplify the voices of children.

The successful candidate will work under the MDI Research Advisor to deliver an exciting and innovative portfolio of high quality, innovative child related research that extends learning and informs policy and programming. The portfolio of topics ranges from anti-trafficking, digital safeguarding and to climate-related migration and out of school children.

2. Team Co-ordinator

In addition to helping deliver our research initiatives, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the strong and effective co-ordination of the team and provide a crucial link between each pillar of the MDI as well as acting as the principal administrative liaison with our supportive functions.

• Familiar with innovative social research methods and approaches
• Proficiency in language other than English
• Experience working for international NGO including developing country experience

Experience conducting research in developing countries

We can offer circa £ 27,000 per annum (If based in UK) with an option of flexible working hours. If the role is based outside of the UK, National T&C (including pay) will apply.

This role can be based in London or any existing Save the Children International Regional or Country office location on approval, provided the successful candidate has proof of eligibility to work from the preferred location.
