Research Associate, Faith and Sustainability Initiative

This position is  a full time 1 year limited term position (with possibility for extension),  based in The Hague (NL) or Washington D.C (US) 

Job Summary

In this position you will provide a lead advisory role regarding GHG measurement and management practices and coordinate WRI’s role in the project. Possible activities include: identifying the potential for GHG emissions reductions and removals from faith-based institutions’ operations, land holdings, and financial holdings; supporting development of a draft program design and pilot testing it with a set of faith-based institutions; identifying the tools and guidance that need to be developed to support faith-based institutions in their efforts to measure and manage their emissions; and support the design and facilitation of scoping workshops with faith-based institutions. In addition, you will manage active engagement with key WRI staff members from the Governance Center, Business Center, Forest Program, and Finance Center.

This position is home based due to Covid-19, but you will be based at WRI’s office in Washington, DC or in The Hague once restrictions have lifted.

Job Responsibilities

• Coordinate WRI’s role in the scoping project across WRI and its partners
• Conduct technical research and advance analysis and understanding of science-based targets, GHG measurement and management relevant to faith-based institutions
• Work closely with key project partners and WRI staff to support program design and pilot testing and identify key resource development needs
• Develop science-based targets aligned technical tools and guidance documents, including sectoral methodologies for faith-based institutions
• Oversee the production of GHG inventories and develop target validation reports for faith-based entities participating in the project
• Participate in internal and external meetings, calls, workshops, and other activities as needed

Job Qualifications

•  Master’s in relevant field such as Environmental Sciences, Environmental or Energy Economics, Environmental Policy, Environmental or Chemical Engineering
• Minimum of 5 to 7 years of full-time work experience related to greenhouse gas measurement and management
• Experience managing staff and projects
• Strong analytical research skills – ability to communicate complex concepts clearly, both orally and in writing, with fluency in English, also to non-technical audiences

The Faith and Sustainability Initiative is a new initiative at WRI that aims to support existing and new faith-based projects in the area of sustainability and enabling faith-based communities to identify ideas and programs that build capacity for community-level solutions to sustainability challenges. This initiative is based in WRI’s Governance Center where the needed expertise for this project currently resides.
