The Research Fellow will work with Professor Stefan Howorka in the Department of Chemistry at University College London in a molecular biology position of the project, ‘Elucidating Membrane Fusion with DNA Nanostructures’.

The postholder will be required to design and create DNA nanostructures that interact with lipid vesicles. The hybrid nanopores will be used to detect diagnostically and biochemically important protein analytes via electrical single-molecule sensing. The DNA structures will be tested within the group and with international collaborators specialising in single-molecule fluorescence analysis.

The post is funded by the Human Frontiers Science Program until 30 September 2023 in the first instance.

The successful candidate will have a PhD degree or equivalent or will have submitted their thesis prior to taking up the position, in Organic Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biological Chemistry, Nanobiotechnology, Physics (or equivalent) and possess experience in the following areas: DNA nanotechnology, lipid bilayers.

Experience in the biophysical characterisation using TEM or fluorescence microscopy is desirable.

All posts that are based outside of London, for example at Harwell, will not have London Allowance included in the salary.

Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6 (salary £31,542 – £33,257 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
