Summary
Become an active member of a research team investigating neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Provide responsible technical assistance in support of research projects by completing assignments requiring a basic knowledge of fundamental techniques and practices related to neurology and genetics, working under minimal supervision by a higher-level research staff member.

Job Duties
Seeking a highly motivated, responsible, and organized individual to join a research team focused on understanding the genetics and pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. The individual will participate in studies directed by Dr. Joshua Shulman in the Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases. The research integrates experimental genetic approaches using both fruit fly (Drosophila) and cell culture models of disease as well as direct study of human subject cohorts. The research technician will assist members of the research team in the conduct of experiments. They may additionally be responsible for the handling, processing, and banking of human tissue samples, such as preparation and storage of DNA from blood. The successful applicant will perform additional duties related to the ongoing research efforts of the laboratory. Excellent time management, communication and organizational skills are essential to collect, analyze and appropriately document experimental results. Training in specialized research methods will be provided.
- Helps prepare and perform research experiments; evaluate and analyze data; and document results.
- Performs routine genetic, biochemical, and molecular biology techniques such as cell culture, Western blotting, ELISA, and DNA cloning. Will also perform fruit fly genetic experiments, including assisting with upkeep of fly stocks.
- DNA sample preparation and management.
- Triage and coordinate requests for biological specimen (saliva, blood) or tests from investigators.
- Maintains detailed records of research activities, including study protocols and records of subject enrollment and sample collection.
- Conducts literature searches and summarize information in an appropriate format for a particular study.
- Orders laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Assists with cleaning, and maintaining the laboratory area in a neat orderly condition.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a Basic Science or related field. Four years of related experience may substitute for degree requirement.
- No experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of related research experience.
