Summary of position:
Drivers provide transportation, delivery and/or errand services to all mission programs. They provide confidential and secure driving services to senior officials, program managers, mission staff, and other visitors or dignitaries. They arrange for diplomatic courier services and car maintenance, and provide basic administrative support services to the mission following established mission* and departmental policies.

The position is a senior working level position for one or more program(s) at the mission.

Within this context, the position has as a primary responsibility for the secure transportation of mission officials and staff, including the HOM and dignitaries, on routes that require diligent pre-analysis, preparation, itinerary planning and security precautions. The position may also drive an armoured vehicle.

•Provides confidential driving services to HOM or staff of the mission and visitors or dignitaries.
•Provides advice to clients on security precautions and protocol and recommends itinerary changes when required.
•Drives mission officials and staff using a regular or armoured diplomatic vehicle and following health and safety policies and procedures.
•Analyses proposed itinerary and safety related information regarding potential threats/problems on the route and prepare alternative itinerary in case of an emergency or recommend changes to the proposed itinerary based on gathered information.
•Maintains situational awareness of security related information regarding potential threats and security situations in the areas that could potentially affect the route/staff transported.
•Liaises with airport authorities, shipping companies, and customs clearances for mission and CBS staff shipments, assisting with the coordination of diplomatic and non-diplomatic mail.
•The Senior Driver has to greet official guests with courtesy and may be required to give security instructions to staff in the vehicle.
•Communicates with staff, which may include the HOM to obtain instructions and greets official guests with courtesy and to be on time with the schedule.
•The Driver must ensure that due to local conditions, routes and sufficient time is allowed for timely transportation of staff to meetings, events and that it respects the established schedule.
•Performs regular and AV related vehicle maintenance duties.
•Performs certain clerical duties related to the work such as; paying tolls/fees, ensuring monthly parking fees are paid, updating the daily logbook and filling out compensation forms.
•Depending on the size and operational needs of the mission, may perform administrative duties in support of the common services section.

 

Essential qualifications:
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, experience and language. Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter and CV how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education
Successful completion of secondary school

Language
Ability to read, write and speak English fluently

Experience
• Experience as a driver for a government agency, livery service or large firm;
• Experience driving in the midwest in all conditions, i.e. winter weather, night driving, etc.
• Experience performing basic car maintenance, e.g. changing a flat tire, checking and topping up oil/fluids;
• Experience providing administrative support tasks, such as record keeping, data entry and courier support; and
• Experience using MS Office Suite, e.g. Word, Excel and Outlook.

Rated Requirements

The Rated Requirements relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies will also be assessed. Methods of assessment may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview, role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Knowledge
• Knowledge of a motor vehicle and its operation;
• Knowledge of basic car mechanics and routine car care;
• Excellent knowledge of street routes and traffic patterns in Chicago and the surrounding areas.

Thorough knowledge of Chicago and locations of the governmental and international organizations (government buildings, other Consulates, etc)

• Expert knowledge and understanding of traffic rules and regulations

Abilities/Competencies

Abilities:
• Ability to read maps, judge distances, understand direction in order to identify and plan the most efficient routes.
• Ability to use a smartphone, GPS, navigation system and related technology systems;
• Ability to use Microsoft Office suite software, e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer;
• Ability to work overtime as required (including nights and weekends).
• Plan & organize regularly scheduled maintenance for both official vehicles. Ability to check fluid levels, tire pressure, etc.
• Conduct minor maintenance (ex. Ability to change flat tire, replace broken wiper blade, add oil/fluids, etc)
• Provide excellent client service, maintaining composure when dealing with unusual situations or difficult clients;
• Assess situations that may involve a security or safety issue and initiate appropriate response;
• Demonstrate attention to detail, including in documentation and record-keeping

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications in their cover letter and CV.

Asset Qualifications:
• Successful completion of a driver/security training course, e.g., defensive driving training.
• Ability to communicate in French
• 5+ years driving experience in the United States of America
• Experience working in an office
• Knowledge of the major roads in the Midwest would be an asset.

Hours of work:
Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with the Locally Engaged Staff (LES) regulations of 40 hours per week. The successful candidate must be able to work frequent overtime on short notice and be available for duties outside of normal working hours, i.e., early morning, evenings, weekends, and some overnight travel.

 

Condition(s) of Employment:
Condition of employment (must be met):
• Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal and credit background check;
• Independent work authorization in the United States and status in accordance with United States protocol directives for foreign missions;
• A valid US driver’s license;
• Clean, safe driving record; and
• Good physical condition; capable of lifting packages or bags up to 50 lbs (22kg).
